The Avenue Tennis Club 96th Annual Tennis Tournament
Avenue Tennis Club located in The Grove in Burnham concluded the 96th annual Burnham on Sea Open Tennis Tournament on Saturday 23 August. This junior and adult annual tournament is certainly one of the largest sporting events to be held in Burnham and certainly the largest tennis event. It has been running since 1910 with breaks only during the period of WW1 and WW2.
This year has seen a very large entry with players coming from all over the South West, South Wales, Cheshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. 272 competitors entered the 33 events and ages ranged from 5 (mini-tennis) to 78. Over 400 matches were played during the week long tournaments. The junior tournament is classed as a LTA Grade 3 and players receive ranking points relative to how far they advance in their event. One young group of 12 juniors from the ROK Tennis Academy in Hartford, Cheshire returned for the 3rd year in succession and their Head Coach Craig Barnard said “we all enjoy coming to Avenue as it is a well organised tournament and everyone is so friendly. We have already ’pencilled in’ a visit for 2015”.
The LTA referee Graeme Luckin who officiated commented “this is my first year refereeing this event and it is certainly one of the most enjoyable and successful ones I have run this year. I shall certainly look forward to returning next year. It is a great tennis club with excellent facilities which Burnham should be proud of ”.
Some Avenue Club players did well with Lyn O’Dell and Malcolm Hall winning the Veteran Mixed Doubles beating club members Poo Jenkins and Barry Ramsden in the final. Avenue Head Coach Jonny Horn and Kelli-Ann Vennall beat Matthew Warnes and Kerry Matthews in a hard fought final of the Mixed Doubles Handicap event. They are also Avenue club members.
The tennis club is very grateful to INTERSPORT Tony Pryce Sports (the largest independent sports retailer in the South West) and to RBC Capital Markets both of whom kindly provided sponsorship”.
