Avenue Tennis Club Men’s League Begins Apr 12Tuesday, May 1, 2012 11:00
The Avenue Tennis Club Men’s teams began their matches in the North Somerset Tennis League with a mix of results. The club runs 7 Men’s Team and 4 Ladies teams with Men’s matches played on Monday evenings and Ladies on a Tuesday; if you are interested in playing then please contact the club as they are always looking for new players or why not turn up and come along and watch some live tennis at the club.
The Men’s A Team playing at home and newly promoted to Division 1, of Craig Phillips, Rob Sweet, Adam Teague and teenager Corrie Nicholls welcomed Weston Super Mare A Team who included previous club coaches Jamie Allen and Greg Kyd. Phillips and Sweet managed to win both their rubbers with new partnership Teague and Nicholls losing both their rubbers in keenly fought matches meaning, that at 2 rubbers a piece, the match would be won or lost on the number of games won; Weston pipped it with 33 games to 32 thereby winning 6 v 4. The B Team of Glen Pigden, Nick Arnold, Colin Christison and Marcus Buncombe ran out winners against Cleeve A 9 v 3 at Cleeve. At home, Avenue’s C Team of Club Captain Richard Belfield, Tom Holder, Brian Phillips and Rich Meare lost 7 v 4 to an experienced Nailsea B Team. The D team travelled to local club Brent Knoll A with Club Coach Barry Ramsden, Ron Purcell and father and son Colin and Sam Stead. Like the first team, first pair Colin and Sam won both their rubbers with Ramsden and Purcell losing their rubbers; however when the games were counted back, both teams had 33 games each meaning they ended the night with a 5 v 5 draw. The Avenue E Team travelled to Winscombe B and was disappointed to lose 9 v 2 with youngster Harry Gough playing his first men’s league match with Lenny Cameron, Lee Fowler and Ian Parrish. The Avenue F team, playing at home against Cheddar D featured 2 teenagers Rob Horler and Josh Lutner playing their first ever Men’s League matches with Ian Phillips and Dave “Scooby” Vennall giving them some experienced match play support which saw them come out winners at 8 v 2. The new G Team of Simon Brafield, Kevin Burrow , Jason Channon and Darren Noades, all of whom joined the club recently, played their first ever league match against a strong Clevedon D team and came out winners at 9 v 2.
The club organises a monthly Adult social tennis tournaments and invites anyone who is interested in playing tennis to come along and join in. The next tournament is on Saturday 5th May to coincide with the FA Cup Final with the tennis starting at 12:00 and finishing before kick off ; all are welcome to attend and play and to watch the football on the club’s large screen; some hot food will be available during half time along with other refreshments. The next social event, at the tennis club, is an Italian Night which will be held on Saturday 12th May from 7:00 and will include some fine Italian style food for Adults from £10 and over 12’s from £5.
The club run a variety of Adult social play sessions during the week on Wed and Fri evenings or Tue, Thur and Sund Morning. Coaching is available for juniors every night of the week and for adults on Thu, Fri and Saturday afternoons.
