Oliver Buncombe from St Josephs School in Burnham on Sea won the BW Controls Ltd Mini Red Tournament at the Avenue Tennis Club on Sunday 18^th Sep. Oliver played Tom Spink, (Mark School) in the final and managed to beat him 10 – 4. Head Coach Vinny Duddy said both boys played really well throughout the day despite the bad weather and that he was very impressed with their sportsmanship and determination to win. Both players have progressed through the club’s Junior Saturday Pay and Play and weekly squad sessions to the BW Controls Ltd Junior Red Ball Academy Squad who train twice a week as a squad and also have an individual lesson with Head Coach Vinny Duddy or club coach Craig Phillips.

The club runs squad coaching for all levels of players every night of the week with either Vinny or Craig and also operates pay and play Saturday coaching sessions which run from 9:00 till 2:30pm. Head Coach Vinny Duddy said that the Pay and Play Sessions are a great way to see if you and your kids like tennis. He said we also do lessons for adults on a Friday night (beginners) and Thursday night (intermediates) or you can go along and book an individual lesson with one to the clubs coaches if working in a group is not for you. A Yellow Ball and Mini Green Ball tournament will be held at the club on 24^th (1:30pm) and 25^th Sep (3:00pm) respectively. The next mini red, orange and green ball competitions at the tennis club will be on Sunday 30^th Oct from 11:00 – 1:00pm, 1:00pm till 3:00pm and 3:00pm till 5:00pm respectively. The club will also be holding a Junior Tennis Camp,daily from 9:00 am till 4:00 pm, during the next school holiday; forms are available at the club or from the website.

Megan has a bumper August

Megan Rundle from the Avenue Tennis Club has had a bumper August winning several Mini Red (Under Trophies and Medals, taking both the Somerset Closed and the Somerset Open Tourament titles at Taunton Blackbrook Tennis Centre as well as taking the Avenue’s Girls Mini Red Open and winning a voucher from tournament sponsors Tony Pryce Sports. Megan’s coach Vinny Duddy said that Megan worked hard in all her matches and he was particularly pleased with her serving which when she focussed on won her easy points, he was also pleased with her movement and concentration during the matches which allowed her to play some powerful winners off of both wings. Megan’s dad Scott Rundle was also pleased with how Megan conducted herself off and on court and said that Megan has proved herself most capable in the Mini Red Events but that she was going to find it more difficult in the near future as she focussed on more Mini Orange Tournaments (8 – 10 year olds), although he was confident that her determination to succeed and her love of playing would be enough to see her improving her tennis and hopefully winning some more competition at this level.

The club will also be the venue for the Somerset Over 45’s Mens Team who will take on the West of Scotland on Sunday 4^th September from 10:30 where the club will be represented by Head Coach Vinny Duddy and Glen Pigden. Duddy said the tennis is a good standard and it would be nice to see some spectators at the club supporting the team.

Megan wins Bournemouth Open

Megan Rundle from the Avenue Tennis Club Academy pictured with participants from the first week of the Avenue’s Summer Holiday Tennis Camp displaying her latest trophy after a fantastic win at the Bournemouth Open which is an LTA grade 3 competition. Megan came second in her box to play the winner of the other box of 4 girls in the semi final and at 9 – 7 down played well under pressure to take the next 4 points, needed to win by 2 clear points. The standard was very high throughout the tournament and Megan played the final against the girl who had beaten her in her first box match 11 – 9; this time Megan kept her cool and used her power and control to win the final 10-6. Parents Scott and Clare said we are very proud of her achievements over the last year as she has now won over 12 tournaments with this one being the furthest she has travelled to. Megan’s Coach and Avenue’s Head Coach Vinny Duddy said that this was really great and that he was really pleased for Megan who has really worked hard to get to where she is. He said he was really pleassed for Scott and Claire, Megans parents who are also both making a huge commitment in getting Megan to her training and more importatntly off to the tournaments around the county and country. Vinny was also able to give Megan a large Adidas Andy Murray poster from Tony Pryce Sports.

Forms are available via the website or from the club house for the Summer Holiday Junior Tennis Camp which will run for 3 weeks over the school summer holidays on weeks 25^th to 29^th July, 1^st to 5^th Aug and 22^nd to 26^th Aug, please book early to avoid disappointment.

The club is running a Wimbledon new members deal during July where new members can join the club for half the normal annual price. New adults will be entitled to 3 FREE Group Tennis Lessons and Junior membership includes FREE fun hour tennis sessions at Vinny’s Minis, on Friday evenings, with coaches Vinny and Nick.

During 10^th – 14^th Aug the club will be running it’s Annual Open Adult Competiion where competitors from all over the county and country will be attending to try and win the prize moneys sponsored by the Club and Haven Burnham on Sea Holiday Park. The following week (15^th – 21^st Aug) will see the 93^rd Burnham On Sea Junior Open Tennis Tournament where again juniors from all over the country will be competing in this LTA Grade 3 competition sponsored by the club and Intersport Tony Pryce. Why not come along to the Avenue and watch some fantastic tennis whilst having your lunch or brunch at the tennis club as hot and cold food will be served throughout the days of the tournaments.

BW Control Ltd Mini Red Tournament April 2011

Ellen Burrow won her first Avenue BW Controls Ltd Mini Red Rovers Tournament of the year winning all four of her matches at Aprils Tournament. Dylan Webb, Jake Cadwallader and Joshua Proctor Chenyll all competed in their first tournament along with Oliver Buncombe in his second tournament. In between matches the players were discussing what they should do during competitions, in between points, during points, etc with Head Coach Vinny Duddy. Vinny wanted to thank daughter Heather for turning up and helping to referee the matches. The next Red (under and Orange Ball (8 to under 10 year olds) tournament at the Avenue Tennis Club is on Sunday 15^h May at 11:00am, Green Ball (10 year olds) on Sunday 24^th April 11.00am and the Yellow Ball Ratings Tournament (11 years + old) on Saturday 30^th April from 1.30pm. The next Sunday Social session will be on FA Cup final day on 14^th May from around 12:30pm until 3:00pm when we will stop and watch the FA Cup final on the club’s large screen.

Next terms squad coaching sessions begin on Tuesday 26^th April, forms are available at the club, bookings can be made over the phone (01278 782758) or you can find the forms on the club’s website; every Saturday there is pay and play tennis available from 9:00am until 2:30pm. Adult coaching is available for beginners/returners to the game on Friday nights (6:30 – 8:00pm) and for players who have played before on a Thursday (7:15 – 9:15pn). Megan and Harry Clean Up at Taunton

Megan Rundle and Harry Burrow from the Avenue BW Controls Ltd Mini Red Academy were both victorious at the end of the Tony Pryce Mini Red Series at Taunton Blackbrook. The event, sponsored by Tony Pryce Sports was run over 4 different weekends in 2010/2011 with the players achieving the best scores being invited to compete in the final of finals. Megan topped her pre qualifying finals in all previous 4 finals and managed to win all her matches with some very powerful serving and some excellent groundshots. Harry, who also won one of the pre qualifying events played exceptionally well and won all his matches in the grand final with one really close match at 10 v 8. Ellen Burrow, sister of Harry was also invited to compete in the girls event and managed an absolutely fantastic 2^nd place. Coach, Vinny Duddy said he was absolutely delighted for both families who have all put in the effort and commitment to achieve these fantastic results saying that both players and parents showed all the right attitudes to ensure that the players will have the opportunity to become great tennis players.

The Avenue Tennis Club organises internal competition like Friday Night junior matchplay and Sunday socials throughout the year and also organises Open competion for all ages and standards every month. The next Red (under and Orange Ball (8 to under 10 year olds) tournament at the club is on Sunday 17^th Apr at 11:00am, Green Ball (10 year olds) on Sunday 24^th April 11.00am and the Yellow Ball Ratings Tournament (11 years + old) on Saturday 30^th April from 1.30pm. BW Controls Ltd – Mini Red Rovers Tournament 27th Mar 11

Megan Rundle from BW Controls Ltd Mini Red Academy won the Avenue Tennis Club Mini Red Rovers March Tournament with a total of 39 points out of 40 (3 wins out of 4 ). New Academy Member Matthias Benischke came 2^nd with 33 points (3 wins out of 4) with the youngest member of the squad, Ellen Burrow coming in third with 29 points. Ellen played the day before at Bath University and received a Bath T Shirt for being the most sporting and happiest player at the event.

Head Coach Vinny Duddy and Junior Tennis Leader Heather Duddy refereed the matches and were both impressed witht the standard of the tennis. Vinny said it was disappointing that only 3 players turned up but would like to remind everyone that this is really the only way that the players can actually measure their improvement; coaching and rallying is great but when it comes down to competition it is really important that the kids can put their training into practice. The next Red Ball tournament at the club is on Sunday 17^th Apr at 11:00.

Duddy is also keen to remind parents that tennis is a great sport for all the family to play together and would like to remind parents that the club has probably the best facilities in Somerset and that they run junior coaching squads every night of the week.. The club run free organised fun sessions on a Friday Night for members from 6:30 to 7:30 (up to age and 7:30 to 8:30 (age 8 to 10). For the older juniors, Friday night is Junior Match Play Night where those members over 11 play doubles for the Junior Monthly Match Play Trophy run by the juniors and for adults there is social doubles and the bar is open.

The next Junior Tennis Camp will be held during the Easter Holidays from 11^th till 21^st April and runs from 9:00 until 4:00pm following requests by parents for a later pick up. Juniors will be taught to play tennis through drills, practice and play from fully qualified LTA Coaches Vinny Duddy and Craig Phillips. Barclays Ball Kids – Heather Duddy Mar 11

Heather Duddy (pictured No 19 above) from the Avenue Tennis Club Junior Academy Squad took part in the Barclays Ball Kids trials in Bristol’s City Academy on Sunday 20^th Mar. There were quite a few kids from around the region taking part in an opportunity of being part of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at Londons O2 Arena where the top 8 men compete for the last one of Tennis’s major honours of the playing year. With a grilling session of running, movement, ball and coordination exercises the hopeful juniors were put through their paces by a team of coaches. With over 2,450 kids entering for the 100 places available the judges said that standards were extremely high and on this occasion Heather unfortunately did not make it through to the National Selection but was invited to take part again next year.

Heather along with some of the other Junior Tennis Leaders at the tennis club helps to run the Junior Match Play Night at the Tennis Club where those members over 11 play doubles for the Junior Monthly Match Play Trophy which was won by Matthew Barret, from King Alfred’s, last month. Head Coach, Vinny Duddy, said the night was set up to ensure that the juniors were included in the social match play which is very important to the club who have two adult organsied social tennis play mornings (Tue & Sun) and evenings (Wed & Fri). For the more serious and social players too, Monday nights is Men’s Night with Tuesdays being Ladies Night which fall nicely in line with the summer league nights. Coaching sessions are available every night of the week to to all ages and standards or you can organise one to ones with the club’s coaching team.

BW Controls Ltd Mini Red Competition 27 Feb 11

Megan Rundle from the BW Controls Ltd Mini Red Academy Squad won the Mini Red Competition at the Avenue Tennis Club on Sunday 27^th Feb 2011.

Megan won all 3 on her individual matches with Louis Bougourd coming second, Ellen Burrow third and Oliver Buncombe, in his first ever tennis competition coming fourth. As there were not many players the 4 keen tennis players played a doubles competition. Each player played a match with each other against the others with the winners (Megan and Louis) being presented with life size hanging posters of Roger Federer and Andy Roddick by BW Controls Ltd Lee Fowler and Ellen’s dad Kevin Burrow. Head Coach Vinny Duddy thanked the players and their parents for coming and said that he hoped to see them again at the next competition on 27^th Mar, same time (11:00) same place (Avenue Tennis Club).

The next social doubles tournament at the tennis club will be on Sunday 20^th Mar from around 11:00am till 1:00pm (ish) with some snacks provided afterwards in the bar – cost to adults £2:00 – invited juniors £1:00 – all new potential members are welcome to attend and play.

Duddy would like to remind parents and players alike that the new term starting 28^th February will see a few timing changes with Cardio Tennis (fitness for adults – no need to be a tennis player) moving from Thursday to Wednesday at the new time of 7:30 through to 8:30 and the Thursday junior yellow ball squad moving to a later start time of 5:30 to 7:00. Coaching squads run every night of the week for all ages and standards. BW Controls Ltd Mini Red Academy perform well again

Avenue Tennis Club Head Coach, Vinny Duddy, was very pleased with the results of Megan Rundle, Harry and Ellen Burrow at the Tony Pryce Mini Red and Orange Tennis Tournaments at Taunton Blackbrook Indoor Centre. Megan once again won all of her matches in the girls tournament winning 10-6, 10-2, 10-6 to take another trophy with Ellen performing well and winning another match during a tournament. Harry once again reached a red ball final to be pipped by Taunton ace Reuben Davey. Harry then went on to compete in the Mini Orange Tournament in the afternoon and won 2 of his three matches. Duddy made in time to see the semis and finals and thought that the standard of play from the players was very good and is sure that Harry will soon be challenging the older and more experienced players. Duddy said also he was very pleased to see another local boy Oliver Punt take the trophy in a very well fought final. A junior yellow ball competition will be held on Saturday 26^th Feb from around 13:00 pm and is open to members and non members. The club will also be running a Mini Red Ball Tournament on Sunday 27^th Feb from 11:00am.

The February School Holiday Junior Tennis Camp will run from 9:00 am till 4:00 pm from Monday 21^st Feb – Friday 25^th February; forms are from the club house or from the website.

Avenue Aces do very Well

Megan Rundle from the BW Controls Ltd Mini Red Tennis Academy based at the Avenue Tennis Club did fantastically well to win the Girls Tony Pryce Indoor Mini Red Winter Series of 2010/11 winning all 4 of her matches

10-3, 10-0, 10-6 and 10-3. This is the second of a series of 4 tournaments which Megan has won with 2 more tournaments scheduled for Feb and Mar. Dad Scott said Megan played really well winning quite a lot of her points with some powerfully accurate serving. Mini red tournaments will restart at the Avenue on Sunday 27^th Feb from 11:00 am with others scheduled for 27/3, 11/4, 15/5, 12/6, 17/7, 28/8 at the same time.

Ellen Burrow pictured with Megan played her first tournament away from the familiar surroundings of the Avenue Tennis Club and managed to win one of her 4 matches and narrowly lost one 10-9.

Harry Burrow was also in action in the Boys Tony Pryce Mini Red Series and won one of the 4 groups of 5 to make the semi final which he won in a very exciting match 12 – 10 but was just beaten in the final 10 – 7 by another youngster from Chippenham. Harry also played his first Orange Ball Tournament in the afternoon down at Taunton and although being the lowest rated at the event managed to win 1 of his 3 matches. Dad Kevin said Harry played really well considering this was his first tournament on the bigger court playing against older and more experienced boys and that he was really proud of the efforts that Harry put in.

Head Coach Vinny Duddy said that it was really great to see the Academy youngsters doing so well and put it down to their hard work at training and their desire to get better. The Avenue Tennis Club will be running a social tennis tournament on Sunday 13^th February where all are welcome to attend and play from 11:00.
