The club will be running it’s Junior Tennis Camp during the first two weeks of the School Summer Holidays from Monday 26^th Jul to Friday 6^th Aug; details and application forms are available on the website  www.avenuetennis.com; parents are advised to book early to avoid any disappointment.

The club will be hosting the Somerset Over 45’s match against Bedfordshire on Saturday 24^th July from 2:00pm and all are welcome to attend and support the county side.  Entry forms are available from the club or the website for the two August Open Tennis Tournaments for adults (11^th Aug – 15^th Aug) and juniors (16^th – 21^st Aug).  The bar will be open during the tournaments serving hot and cold food so why not pop down and watch some good live tennis at the Avenue Tennis Club during your lunch breaks or during the day.

Head coach, Vinny Duddy, ran the course and thought that all the juniors put in a lot of effort, concentration and personal time to take the course and was particularly pleased that 5 of 6 came from the Avenue’s own Tennis Academy.  As well as doing the 4 modules the  juniors are also expected to complete a minimum 18 hours volunteering in last 3 modules above.  Vinny gave them some specific tasks for the Club Media and Communcations module which are nearly all complete, they have been assisting the coaching staff with the weekday squad and weekend coaching (something all of them are finding very rewarding and great fun).  For the last module the group decided to run a Junior Tennis Competition for 11 to 16 year olds at the Avenue on a date to be confirmed in the near future; if you are interested then please visit the website, the club or see the kids at King Alfred’s for more details.  Now that they have completed their courses they will be allowed to assist with the coaching at the tennis club, under the guidance of the coaches, and will charge for their time, details can be obtained from the office.

6 teenagers from the Avenue Tennis Club took part and completed the English Lawn Tennis Association’s Junior Tennis Leaders Award.  The junior tennis players, most from King Alfred’s, spent 3 Sundays and 1 Saturday evening taking part in 4 modules developed by the LTA to introduce more young people into tennis volunteering and to give them the opportunity to take the first steps on a tennis and or sporting career pathway.  The 4 modules were Planning, Organisation and Communication, Club Media and Communications, Playing Partner/Buddy Hitting and Competition Assistant.

 Avenue Tennis Club Coach, Craig Phillips from Brean, presents Heather Duddy with the Friday Night Junior Match Play Trophy for the month of March.  Heather won the trophy with 20 points, just 1 ahead of Stuart Kilmartin and 2 ahead of Josh Lutner from Weston.  After two months she also leads the cumulative monthly points score; details of the results can be seen on the Avenue’s website – www.avenuetennis.com.  Head coach, Vinny Duddy, said the Friday night match play event is for those junior members who are in school year 7 + and is run as a doubles event with Craig choosing players to compete against each other as and when matches finish so there is no waiting around and has proved to be a great success so far.

An Introduction to Digital Photography evening has been organised at the tennis club on 27^th April from 7:00 pm to 9:30pm at a cost of £20; details of the itinerary can be obtained from the website or you can book to attend the evening by ringing the office on 01278 782758.  The evening is being run by former local boy Simon Plant who is an award winning photographer in his own right; his work has been published world wide and he was shortlisted in 2009 for Landscape Photographer of the Year.

 

The next social play tournament will be on Sunday 18^th April and starts at 11 with the next social evening event being an Italian Evening on Saturday 15^th May at 7:30 ish.

Avenue Tennis Club Head Coach is Upgraded

Avenue Tennis Club Head Coach Vinny Duddy attended the LTA’s 4 day Club Coach Upgrade to further improve his tennis coaching skills and knowledge and also ensure that the Avenue Tennis Club met the LTA’s strict requirements with regard to their national Clubmark requirements.  .  James Kerry, one of the Avenue first team players and part time coach at the club also attended the course to upgrade his Development Coaching Award.  The Avenue was the 2^nd club in Somerset to achieve this award last year and has been through the first annual review suceessfully.  Achieving Tennis Clubmark means the LTA endorses and supports the club’s tennis programmes, policies and procedures, action and development planning, and club management

The Avenue Juniors are going to participate in the Lazy Town Sport Relief sponsorship evening on Friday 19^th March where they will be encouraging their mums, dads, uncles, aunties and any friends yo come down to the club and have a “FREE” coaching session.  Friday nights is normally family night with Vinny’s Minis, Junior Matchplay, Adult Coaching and Adult Social play throughout the evening. The bar is also open for those who would prefer to stay in the warm and watch.

The Avenue Tennis Club is offering new members the opportunity to join the tennis club and get 14 months membership for the price of 12.  The new membership deal is subject to the new member completing a direct debit mandate that would start from the 1 April 2010 and would be at 2009 membership prices as shown on their web site www.avenuetennis.com.   Details can also be obtained from new membership secretary Di Dimond (07979 227866).

I’m sure like me, you have made a New Year’s Resolution to improve your fitness, reduce your weight, cut down on this and that, etc, etc, etc………. Why not get more involved with tennis either through coaching or through the social play we have here at the club.  I am sure that we all have a friend that has said they would like to take up tennis but are a little overawed at coming along and getting started – I would like to challenge all our adult members to try and persuade a new player down to the club.  All new players are allowed to come along with a current member up to 3 times during January and February before they will be expected to join the club, normally there is a visitors fee of £5 to play but the Committee have agreed to waive this charge for January and February 2010 in the hope that we will encourage some new members to join.

Social Play – Organised social play happens on the following days:

Wednesday and Friday evening from 18:30 till 21:45 hrs

Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 09:00 till 12:30 hrs

Sunday mornings from 09:00 till 12:00 hrs

Senior Coaching squads and sessions for the 2010

Under 18 Performance Squad recommences on Wednesday 13^th Jan 2010 at 19:30 till 21:00 hrs.  This session is aimed at those youngsters that want to improve their technique and tactics through some focused physical and technical coaching – all ages are welcome to attend provided their playing standard is appropriate to the rest of the group.

Cardio training recommences on Thursday 14^th Jan 2010 at 18:00 till 19:00 hrs.  Come down and get fit whilst hitting lots of tennis balls.

Intermediate Adult Coaching recommences on Thursday 14^th Jan 2010 from 19:15 till 21:15 hrs.  This session is aimed at those adults who have played some tennis and want to improve their technique and tactics through practice, coaching and games.

Beginner/Improver Adult Coaching recommences on Friday 15^th Jan 2010 at 18:30 till 20:00 hrs.  This session is aimed at those adults who want to get back into tennis or want to take it up for the first time.

Men’s League Practice Nights are every Monday night from 18:00 till 21:45 hrs. All ages and standards are really welcome to attend these sessions as we have league teams playing at a variety of standard who are always in need of players.

Ladies League Practice Nights are every Tuesday night from 18:00 till 21:45 hrs.  All ages and standards are really welcome to attend these sessions as we have league teams playing at a variety of standard who are always in need of players.

Following several queries about when courses will start up again here is a reminder about the various courses being run; the course forms can be obtained from the office or our website.

SQUAD coaching courses will recommence on Monday 11^th Jan 2010 and will finish for the school holidays on 12^th Feb 2010.  Timings are as follows:

Junior Academy Yellow Ball Squad – starts Monday 11^th Jan  – promising junior players invited to attend intensive physical and technical coaching sessions on Mon, Tues, Wed and Friday nights- see office for details.

Mini Tennis Red Squads – for under 8’s, players will learn basic technique and movement whilst having fun and meeting new friends:

Thursday 14^th Jan        4:30 – 5:30      – Players new to tennis

The Avenue Junior Tennis Academy players and some other promising junior tennis players at the club competed in the Xmas Academy Tournament 2009 which was held during the evenings of 14^th – 17^th Dec..  The winner of the event was Sam Stead, second was Will Jones with Tom Cashmore coming in third.  The event started with 14 players, all of whom were to play the best of three sets of seven games against each other which would have meant a potential total of  39 sets or 273 games.  Unfortunately a sickness bug and some last minute homework assignments meant 4 players were unable to complete the tournament. 

Head Coach, Vinny Duddy and Trainee Coach, Craig Phillips ran the event and were really pleased with the efforts made but were surprised with some of the results.  Both thought that the event gave the players a good insight into what qualities were needed to compete against other players in a tournament.  Both Duddy and Phillips were particularly grateful to the parents who brought their children to the club and thanked them for their support.

Coaching at the Avenue will recommence in the New Year with Saturday Pay and Play from 9:00 in the morning, through the various ages groups until 2:30 in the afternoon.  Junior Academy and Squad Group Coaching will start on Monday 11^th January.  Adults intermediate and beginner classes will restart on Thursday 14^th Jan and Friday 15^th respectively. New Year is normally a time for sporting resolutions; so why not come the Tennis Club and give tennis a go; for those of you like a good work out but don’t particularly want to play a lot of tennis why not come down on a Thursday evening to the Cardio Sessions which will have you doing lots of hard work intermingled with hitting lots of tennis balls from 6:00 till 7:00pm.

The first social event of the New Year 2010 will be a Rabbie Burns night which will be held at the Tennis Club on Saturday 30^th January.  For those that do not like Haggis there will be a lovely Scottish Stew.  The three course Scottish meal will cost adults £7.50 and children £3.50; bookings can be made on the listing in the clubhouse foyer notice board.

Sunday 22^nd November saw 13 Avenue Tennis Club members meet to play in the Jan Mackay Memorial Trophy, despite forecasts of gale force winds and rain.  The tournament took place in almost brilliant sunshine, which in itself posed a problem for the players playing into the low sun.

The tournament format saw the ladies potentially having a different partner for the four championship tie breaks that they played.  This ended up with ladies Captain, Lynn O’Dell and new lady member Susan Parsons as the highest scoring ladies together with father and son Colin and Sam Stead in the men.  The pairing of Lynn and Colin against Susan and Sam led to a very close and exciting match which saw the experience of Lynn and Colin win through 6 – 4.  The other final matches saw Head Coach Vinny Duddy and another new lady member Carrie Vohra beat his daughter Heather and Alan Galloway to take 3^rd place (6 – 3), however bragging rights in the Duddy household go to Heather who aced her dad.  The final match was between Club coach, Barry Ramsden and junior Jessica Griffiths beat junior Alex Stead and Steve Perry which end 7 – 5 to Jess and Barry.

The trophies were presented to the winners by Hugh Mackay who thanked the players for attending and playing.  A final presentation was made to the best junior Sam Stead.  Head coach Vinny said it is really great to see the other Avenue Academy Juniors, Alex Stead, Jessica Griffith and Heather Duddy competing with the adults and holding their own.

An Xmas Family Lunch will be held on Sunday 29^th November from 12:30 pm with adults costing £10 and under 10’s £7 – if you wish to come then please contact Poo Jenkins on 01278 783396 or put your name and numbers required on the list in the club foyer.

3 Junior Academy players (Jessica Griffiths, Sam Stead, Heather Duddy) joined in the adult Ron Hines Memorial Tournament held at the Avenue on Sunday 17^th October s and were all able to compete and hold their own.  Pictured above is Jess, who out of the three players won the highest number of games and was presented by Peter Alexander with a tube of new balls for her efforts.
