The Avenue Tennis Club is running a new adult membership deal which will see new adults receiving full membership from Nov 11 till Mar 12. Included in the membership offer are 10 FREE tennis lessons on a Saturday afternoon from 2:00 till 3:30 and all for a cost of £50. Avenue Tennis Head Coach Vinny Duddy said he hoped this was a good offer that would encourage more new players down to the club to either begin tennis or just get back into it. Membership of the club allows players free use of the courts, access to an excellent club house with superb facilities (including wi-fi and a large screen), a competitively priced and extensively stocked bar, access to reduced coaching rates, reduced room hire rates and to be part of Community based club that organises several social events throughout the year, as well as internal club tournaments and social play mornings and evenings.

The Captain’s Dinner will be held on Saturday 12^th November; anyone wishing to attend should contact Captain’s Richard Belfield or Lynn O Dell at the Tennis Club.

Weekday Junior Coaching Squads restarted on Monday 31^st October where juniors are taught how to play tennis through lots of movement and racket/ball coordination exercises and games – (members £3.75 or non member £4.25 per session).

The club will be holding another Social Sunday Mixed Doubles Tournament on Sunday 20^th Nov in memory of Jan Mackay a former member at the club; all are welcome to attend and play with play scheduled to begin around 11:00 and complete around 1:00 with the bar open for refreshment afterwards – see website – www.avenuetennis.com.

Avenue Green Trophies Tournament 26th Sep 11

The Mini Green Trophies Tournament was held at the Avenue Tennis Club on Sunday afternoon 25^th Sep. The three players who entered were all playing in their first ever green ball tournament which sees the player playing full court with a partially decompressed ball. Mason Parker (pictured centre) managed to come out the victor on the day beating Ellie May Vohra 2 v 4, 4 v 1 and 4 v 0 having had a walk over win against Spencer Cole who had had to retire ill. Spencer had started the tournament against Ellie May and lost 4 v 2, 4 v 2 and played a marathon match of over 1 and half hours with one service game taking over 20 minutes as both players went from deuce to advantage and back. Head Coach Vinny Duddy referreed the event and applauded the players for their efforts and wanted to thank their parents for bringing them along. He said it is great to see the players move up through the LTA approved balls from Mini Red (up to age 8), to Mini Orange (8 – 9) to green ball (10) and then finally to full ball at age 11 and each of these players has done that at the Avenue. Vinny said that the different types of balls and court sizes allow the kids to learn not only good technique but also good tactics and strategies to win; the club runs tournaments for all the different age groups with the next Red (11:00am), Orange (13:00pm) and Green (15:00pm) Tournaments being run on the sames days Sunday 30^th Oct and 27^th Nov.

The club runs squad coaching for all levels of players every night of the week with either Vinny or Craig and also operates pay and play Saturday coaching sessions which run from 9:00 till 2:30pm. Head Coach Vinny Duddy said that the Pay and Play Sessions are a great way to see if you and your kids like tennis. He said we also do lessons for adults on a Friday night (beginners) and Thursday night (intermediates) or you can go along and book an individual lesson with one to the clubs coaches if working in a group is not for you. Avenue Head Coach’s 50th

Avenue Tennis Club’s Head Coach Vinny Duddy held a Junior and Senior Tennis Tournament to help celebrate reaching 50 years young. The junior tournament was won by Harry Burrow who won all of his matches with Billy Walsh, Harry Brafield, Liam Burrow, Ellie May Vohra and Charlie Jackson. The tournament was run by Heather Duddy and her friends from King Alfreds who all made the event fun for the kids competing. The adult tournament of 10 pairs was won by Glen Pigden and Linda Matthews who with 25 points beat Kelly Anne Vennall and Sam Stead into 2^nd place by 1 point. Vinny wanted to thank all the families that attended the tournament and played. The evening bash was attended by over 80 members, friends and family who all participated in a successful raffle to obtain some more tennis equipment for the juniors at the tennis club. Vinny wanted to thank Theresa and Steve Plant for providing the excellent live music which got everyone up dancing and having a great time. He would also like to thank friends Julie and Lenny Cameron from Tickle your taste Buds who organised and arranged the hot food together with his niece Elizabeth Wynn who made a massive tennis themed cake.

Vinny said that this weekend was fantastic and was what he really wanted to see more of at the tennis club with friends, family and members all mixing to having some fun and more importantly to play some tennis. Vinny said that tennis is a great sport for all the family to play together from toddlers to great grandparents. Nick gets to play against Tim Henman

Avenue Tennis Coach and team player Nick Arnold was offered the opportunity to go up to Leeds on Monday 15th August to play tennis with Tim Henman. Nick was offered the reward from the Highbridge ASDA store where he works following an incentive won by the store . Nick said he was really pleased to meet Tim and as he was the only tennis player then the opportunity was taken to hit a few balls with him.

Avenue Head Coach Drills the Spanish Way

Avenue Tennis Club Head Coach Vinny Duddy attended the RPT Spanish Drills course in Liverpool to obtain more professional development license points for his LTA Licence. Duddy said the LTA require that their coaches obtain 18 points a year to maintain their LTA Licence which means at least 3 professional development day long tennis courses. He said this course was very good and gave him some more new ideas for including on the club’s tennis programmes.

Duddy said that there were still places available on the last week of the Club’s Junior Tennis Camp which runs from 9:00 am till 4:00 pm daily from 22^nd Aug till 26^th Aug; forms can be downloaded via the website or from the club house.

During 10^th – 14^th Aug the club will be running it’s Annual Open Adult Competiion where competitors from all over the county and country will be attending to try and win the prize moneys sponsored by the Club and Haven Burnham on Sea Holiday Park. The following week (15^th – 21^st Aug) will see the 93^rd Burnham On Sea Junior Open Tennis Tournament where again juniors from all over the country will be competing in this LTA Grade 3 competition sponsored by the club and Intersport Tony Pryce. Why not come along to the Avenue and watch some fantastic tennis whilst having your lunch or brunch at the tennis club as hot and cold food will be served throughout the days of the tournaments.

BW Controls Ltd Mini Red Competition 17th Jul 11

The Avenue Tennis Club hosted the BW Controls Ltd Mini Red Tournament on Sunday 17^th July which was attended by 7 budding tennis aces all under 8’s. Competing for their first times were Charlie Jackson and Tom Spinks who both did very well with Charlie wining 4 of his matches and Tom winning 1. The competition was won, once again by Megan Rundle with 6 wins who also won the Tony Pryce Mini Red Tournament the week before at Taunton. Second with 5 wins was Matthias Benischke, 3^rd was Charlie with 4 wins, Joint 4th was Oliver Buncombe and Joshua Chenylle Proctor, Joint 5^th was Dylan Webb and Tom Spinks. Head Coach Vinny Duddy ran the tournament with help from daughter Heather and said the players did a fantastic job in such difficult windy conditions and he thanked their parents for making the effort to bring them along.

The club is running a Wimbledon new members deal during July where new members can join the club for half the normal annual price. New adults will be entitled to 3 FREE Group Tennis Lessons and Junior membership includes FREE fun hour tennis sessions at Vinny’s Minis, on Friday evenings, with coaches Vinny and Nick.

Berrow and Burnham Infants Juniors are Blitzed

Head Coach Vinny Duddy and Craig Phillips continued their Tennis Blitz tour of the local Junior Schools spending a day at Berrow and 2 days a Burnham Infants. The pair were once again greeted by lots of enthusiastic children who all seemed to enjoy the fun games and skills that the coaches took them through. Vinny said we had a fantastic time with all the children responding very well. With Wimbledon on our doorstep and Andy Murray winning Queens we are hoping to encourage more children down to the tennis club to get involved in the coaching or the Friday night fun sessions. All the children were given vouchers to attend the Friday night Vinny’s Minis session or Saturday morning pay and play coaching. Vinny was also keen to point out that the club is looking for new adult members too and advised that tennis is game that you can play together as a family. He also said why not just come down and get involved as a Social Member. The club organises lots of subsidised social events throughout the year and it’s bar is open on Monday, Wednesday, Friday nights and Sunday afternoons for all members and friends to come along. Vinny added a reminder to Berrow school parents that the club were running an Inset Day of coaching on Friday 1^st July; contact Vinny for details or see school.

The club will be holding it’s Open Day on Sunday 3^rd July; all are welcome to attend the FREE coaching with racket demos from Tony Pryce/Prince, Strawberries and Cream Teas, Pimms, the Somerset Mens and Ladies Closed Finals live on court and the Wimbledons Mens Final live on the large screen. A NEW Membership deal will also be available throughout July of 9 months for the price of 6, for adult membership only this will also include 3 FREE Group coaching lessons.

The next tennis camps will run during the Summer School Holidays for 3 weeks (week 1 is 25^th – 29^th July, Week 2 is 1^st – 5^th Aug and Week 3 is 22^nd – 26^th Aug. Duddy said parents can take up a variety of options from daily coaching rates to doing the whole three weeks but added that they needed to book early.

Junior coaching sessions are available at the Avenue every night of the week and on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 2:30 for all age groups and standards; the new 7 week term started Monday 6^th June. Adult coaching is available for beginners/returners to the game on Friday nights (6:30 – 8:00pm) and for players who have played before on a Thursday (7:15 – 9:15pn). If you just want to keep fit hitting tennis balls then why not try out Cardio Tennis on a Wednesday evening from 7:30 till 8:30pm.
