We will be running evening Red, Orange and Yellow Ball squad training for those children who want to continue with their tennis training during the summer holidays

Red (5–6:30pm) – 26/7, 28/7, 2/8, 4/8, 9/8, 23/8 & 25/8

Orange (5–6:30 pm) – 27/7, 30/7, 3/8, 6/8, 10/8, 24/8, 27/8

Yellow – (6:30-8:30pm) – 26/7, 28/7, 2/8, 4/8, 9/8, 23/8, 25/8

Avenue Junior Tennis Leaders Award 2010

The Junior Tennis Leaders Awards course was developed by the LTA to introduce and encourage more youngsters into getting more involved at their tennis clubs and is seen as the first step on a pathway towards a career in sport and more specifically in tennis. It is aimed at 13 to 16 Year olds with an interest in tennis and sport.

There are 4 modules which are intended to give the attendees some new skills and experience are:

Module 1 – Planning, Organisation and Communication

Understand the importance of planning

Recognise and be able to use effective communication skills

Understand the of good organisation on and off court

Put the skills into practice on court

Module 2 – Club Media and Communications

Under why media and communication are important to the clubs development

Be able to assist with/be responsible for media and communication tasks at the club

Module 3 – Playing Partner/Buddy Hitting

Know the attributes of a good buddy hitter

Know how to feed appropriately

Understand the 5 game situations

Learn how to feed in game based situations

Module 4 – Competition Assistant

Understand why competition is important

Be able to assist at a competition

Head coach, Vinny Duddy, ran the course and thought that all the juniors put in a lot of effort, concentration and personal time to take the course and was particularly pleased that 5 of 6 came from the Avenue’s own Tennis Academy. As well as doing the 4 modules the juniors are also expected to complete a minimum 18 hours volunteering in last 3 modules above. Vinny gave them some specific tasks for the Club Media and Communcations module and some excerts are shown in this article. They have been assisting the coaching staff with the weekday squad and weekend pay and play coaching (something all of them are finding very rewarding and great fun). For the last module the group decided to run a Junior Tennis Competition for 11 to 16 year olds at the Avenue. Now that they have completed their tasks they will be allowed to assist with the coaching at the tennis club, under the guidance of the coaches, and will charge for their time within the following guidelines.

Jessica Griffiths, Heather Duddy, Sam Stead, Robert Horler, Alex Stead and Rhiannon Parson (aleady approved as a Club hitter) have been given permission to offer their services as Buddy Hitters provided the undermentioned conditions are met and adhered to:

Buddy Hitters will only be able to offer this service to

Fully paid up members of the Avenue Tennis Club
Junior players on a club coaching programme
Have the players coach’s approval and assistance

Parents will be expected to

Ensure their children act in a proper and respectful way during their time on court and that they arrive and leave on times as agreed
Make a payment of at least £3 per hour to the Buddy Hitter on the day straight after the session has finished

Coaches will be expected to

Ensure that the Buddy Hitter is aware of what the player should be working on and have agreed it with the buddy hitter and player

Any problems should be taken up with the Head Coach

Following the success of this course Head Coach Vinny Duddy is planning to organise another course in Autumn and is expecting to have a further 12 juniors which will include some youngsters from Wellington Tennis Club where he coaches on a Saturday; if you wish to attend the course please contact him at the tennis club (01278 782758).

The Avenue Tennis Club will be holding its Annual Open Day on Sunday 4^th July 2010 starting at 10:30. A new membership deal will be available to all during the month of July which will include 3 FREE Group coaching sessions and 9 months membership for the price of 6.

The day will start with FREE coaching for all juniors and adults from 10:30 till 12:30. At 12:30 visitors and members will be able to either continue playing tennis on courts 5 – 8 or to watch the Somerset Closed Men’s Tennis Final live on Court 2 next to the club house.

During the day exhibitors from Tony Pryce Sports and Prince Rackets will be available to demonstrate and advise on new tennis rackets and sports wear. There will be Strawberries and Cream, Pimms, hot and cold food and the Avenue’s well stocked bar will be open to all throughout.

The Final of the Wimbledon Men’s Final will be shown on the large screen in the clubhouse and all are welcome to attend this.

Junior Tennis Camp 26th Jul to 6th Aug

Last terms tennis camp in Jun, saw some of the best weather so far this year making the Camp a great success with all the kids having a fun time whilst learning to play tennis. On the last two days of the camp Vinny and kids had to resort to the “Shaggy Dog” cold water treatment to keep their heads cool on court which added to the fun – let’s hope the first two weeks of the summer holidays has the same weather.

The Summer Holiday Camp will run from Monday 26th July to Friday 5th Aug with qualified LTA coaches taking the youngsters through a variety of tennis strokes whilst normally finishing off the sessions with some fun games and/or match play.

Timings are from 09:00 am till 03:00 pm daily (excluding weekend).

You should make sure that your child has plenty to drink and has lots of snacks included with their daly packed lunch. The club’s bar will be opened after the children have finished their lunches. Please ensure they also have wet weather clothing as the coaches will try and ensure that the kids are on court for as long as possible.

Their First Mini Competition – Avenue Tennis Club – May 2010

Early on Sunday morning 4 Mini Red Squad players from the Avenue Tennis Club took part in their first ever Tennis Tournament. Harry Burrow, Owen Rose, Megan Rundle and Zoe Collyer played each other in Championship Tie Breaks and then finished off with a mixed and a girls v boys doubles match. The tournament was organised by Head Coach Vinny Duddy who was really pleased and proud of how well all the players played, competed and had fun on the day. He said that the standard of play and focus from the players far exceeded his expectations and that he wanted to thank the parents for taking the time to bring the kids down to the club and Charlotte Mylrea for her help in refereeing the event.

The Avenue Tennis Club follows LTA guidelines with respect to Junior Coaching and is now in their 2^nd year of being an officially recognised “Clubmark” venue passing their first annual review in December 09. The club’s coaches are all LTA qualified and licensed and provide coaching throughout the week from Monday to Saturday for groups or individuals. Three new classes will start from next term (7^th Jun) and will be run by Craig Phillips, Somerset’s Number 1 player who is looking to break into the top 50 in the UK. The new classes will be on Tuesday and Wednesday (Mini Red up to age 8 from 16:30 – 17:30 or Mini Orange age 8 – 10 from 17:30 – 18:30). This means that there will be coaching for all age groups on every night of the week at the tennis club; details of the squads and coaching can be obtained from the club’s website or from the office (01278 782758).

The next event at the Tennis Club will be a World Cup Social Tennis Tournament on Saturday 12^th Jun which will start at 4:00 pm and will definitely be completed in time for the start of England’s first group match against USA so that the players can sit down and watch the game on the club’s large screen; the bar will be open, food will be served and all are welcome to attend.

6 teenagers from the Avenue Tennis Club took part and completed the English Lawn Tennis Association’s Junior Tennis Leaders Award. The junior tennis players, most from King Alfred’s, spent 3 Sundays and 1 Saturday evening taking part in 4 modules developed by the LTA to introduce more young people into tennis volunteering and to give them the opportunity to take the first steps on a tennis and or sporting career pathway. The 4 modules were Planning, Organisation and Communication, Club Media and Communications, Playing Partner/Buddy Hitting and Competition Assistant.

Qualified LTA Coaches will take the youngsters through a variety of tennis strokes and finish the sessions off with fun games and/or match play.

The Avenue Tennis Club’s Easter Junior Tennis Camp was a great success once again with the weather being fantastic for the whole week. Head coach, Vinny Duddy said that one of the focuses of the camp this time round was to get the Mini Reds (under 8’s) rallying consistently across the net and this proved a great success with Megan Rundle (nearly 7) doing a rally of 194 shots with trainee coach Craig Phillips. The next tennis camp will be during the Spring Bank Holiday week from Tuesday 1^st to Friday 4^th June, anyone wishing to attend should book up as soon as possible by contacting Vinny or Craig at the club or visiting the website and completing a form.

An Introduction to Digital Photography evening has been organised at the tennis club on 27^th April from 7:00 pm to 9:30pm at a cost of £20; details of the itinerary can be obtained from the website or you can book to attend the evening by ringing the office on 01278 782758. The evening is being run by former local boy Simon Plant who is an award winning photographer in his own right; his work has been published world wide and he was shortlisted in 2009 for Landscape Photographer of the Year.

The next social event at the Tennis Club is an Italian Evening on Saturday 15^th May at 7:30 ish; all are welcome to attend.

Heather wins March Junior Match Play Trophy

Avenue Tennis Club Coach, Craig Phillips from Brean, presents Heather Duddy with the Friday Night Junior Match Play Trophy for the month of March. Heather won the trophy with 20 points, just 1 ahead of Stuart Kilmartin and 2 ahead of Josh Lutner from Weston. After two months she also leads the cumulative monthly points score; details of the results can be seen on the Avenue’s website – www.avenuetennis.com. Head coach, Vinny Duddy, said the Friday night match play event is for those junior members who are in school year 7 + and is run as a doubles event with Craig choosing players to compete against each other as and when matches finish so there is no waiting around and has proved to be a great success so far.

The next social play tournament will be on Sunday 18^th April and starts at 11 with the next social evening event being an Italian Evening on Saturday 15^th May at 7:30 ish.
