Head Coach Vinny Duddy advised the newspaper that the main objective for the Avenue Tennis Club was to try and encourage more families to get involved at the tennis club. Tennis is a sport that can be played from 3 to 93 and is one of the sports that all the family can play together.

The club has probably the best tennis facilities in the South West with 8 floodlit tennis courts (4 Astra and 4 Hard), a hitting wall, Boules court, large patio and grassed area together with an excellent modern club house with bar, kitchen and shower facilities.

The club runs squad coaching sessions every day of the week for juniors, offers 1 to 1 coaching, runs Saturday Pay and Play, offers Cardio Fitness and Adult only coaching sessions – details can be obtained from the website (www.avenuutennis.com).

The club has a thriving social section with organized social doubles play on Wednesday and Friday evenings; the bar is open too. Social doubles are also organized on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday am. The club also runs Mixed Doubles Teams in the winter and Men’s and Ladies Teams during the summer – training for the teams is on Monday for Men’s and Tuesday for Ladies.

Vinny would like to remind all the family members that Vinny’s Minis restarts on Friday 21st Jan from 6:30. Vinny’s Minis is two hour long free sessions which for members of the club 6:30 to 7:30 is aimed at youngsters up to the age of 8 and the second session from 7:30 to 8:30 for youngsters aged 8 +. On Friday’s the hard courts are allocated to the juniors aged 11+ and they are encouraged to take part in the Junior Match Play Doubles from 8:00pm.

The Avenue Tennis club was the venue for the Somerset Over 45’s third of 4 county matches against a strong Devon side. The Somerset team comprised Glen Pigden from the Avenue together with Paul David (Minehead), James Buckle (Nether Stowey) and Neil Driver (Millfield). Despite some good games and lots of effort from the Somerset team they went down 5 rubbers to 0. Their final match will be played on 5th Sep against Dorset at the prestigious West Hants Rackets Club – let’s hope that they do a little better this time.

Following the success of the Avenue;s Junior Tennis Camp the club is running another week of Tennis Training and Coaching for the last week of the summer holiday from Monday 23rd Aug to Friday 27th Aug; details and application forms are available on the website www.avenuetennis.com; parents are advised to book early to avoid any disappointment.

Entry forms are available from the club or the website for the two August Open Tennis Tournaments for adults (11th Aug – 15th Aug) and juniors (16th – 21st Aug). The bar will be open during the tournaments serving hot and cold food so why not pop down and watch some good live tennis at the Avenue Tennis Club during your lunch breaks or during the day.

Details of the events and tennis coaching courses held at the Avenue Tennis Club can be obtained from the office (01278 782758) or from the club website (www.avenuetennis.com).

The Junior Tennis Camp is running during the first two weeks of the School Summer Holidays from Monday 26th Jul to Friday 6th Aug; details and application forms are available on the website www.avenuetennis.com; parents are advised to book early to avoid any disappointment.

Head Coach Vinny Duddy said that the Avenue Tennis Club’s annual Open Day on Sunday 4th July was a fantastic success with lots of new potential members, adults and juniors, coming to the club and having some coaching and fun with the Avenue’s coaching team. Starting at 10:30 Barry Ramsden and Craig Phillips took nearly 30 youngsters on court with the mini red balls (Under 8’s) and went through a series of racket and coordination skills finishing off with some fun games. Jamie Allen took the older kids on 2 courts with Vinny taking 12 adults onto the other 2 astro courts. Vinny wanted to thank the ladies from the club Poo Jenkins, Pat Hunter, Elaine Amos and Sue Parsons who worked extremely hard to provide all the attendees with hot food and drinks and some excellent strawberry cream teas. Club Chairman, Gordon Hunter looked after the bar and made his infoamous Pimms drink which went down a treat.

At 12:30 all the coaching stopped so that the Somerset Closed Finalists could play their match to find out who would be Somerset’s Number 1. Matt Barnard, Somerset Men’s Captain pictured on the right above took on the Avenue’s Coach, Craig Phillips from Brean in a really super hard hitting fast match. Matt used all his experience to make the match difficult for Craig but in the end Craig’s hard and accurate ground strokes proved too much with Craig running out as winner in two sets (6 v 3, 6 v 4). Matt and Craig were very considerate to the on lookers finishing their match just in time to watch Rafa Nadal take on Thomas Berdych on the Avenue’s large screen. Vinny passed on thanks to Tony Pryce Sports who sponsored the prize monies for the tournament and to Prince Rackets demosntrator Peter Clarke for their attendance at the club’s Open day.

The club is running a Wimbledon new members deal during July where new members can join the club for the next 9 months for the price of 6. Effectively this means the cost per day for a new adult member is 36 pence (£100 per 9 months) with an under 10 being only 5 pence per day (£15 for 9 months).

Head Coach Vinny Duddy issued a challenge to the members of the Avenue Tennis Club in a recent e mail to the club’s membership – excert is as follows “I’m sure like me, you have made a New Year’s Resolution to improve your fitness, reduce your weight, cut down on this and that, etc, etc, etc………. Why not get more involved with tennis either through coaching or through the social play we have here at the club. I am sure that we all have a friend that has said they would like to take up tennis but are a little overawed at coming along and getting started – I would like to challenge all our adult members to try and persuade a new player down to the club. All new players are allowed to come along with a current member up to 3 times before they are expected to join, normally there is a visitors fee of £5 to play but the Committee have agreed to waive this charge for January and February 2010 so please try and bring someone new along with you and let’s see if we can get them involved and playing tennis”.

Vinny also reminded the members that they had the best facilities in the county and that they should therefore encourage friends and family along to the club to take up tennis as it is a sport that anyone can play together no matter how old or what standard they are.

The club is really trying to encourage more families to get involved in tennis and with the full use of 8 courts, have set aside Friday evenings to cater for all the family. There is adult coaching from 6:30 till 8:00 pm, junior match play from 8:00 till 9:45, social adult mixed doubles from 6:30 till 9:45 and organised fun junior sessions for up to year group 3 from 6:30 till 7:30 and year 4 plus from 7:30 till 8:30 (Vinny’s Minis) – come on down and try us out.

The club is also keen to encourage social membership where non players can take advantage of its well stocked bar and organised functions/parties. The first social event of the New Year 2010 will be a Rabbie Burns night which will be held at the Tennis Club on Saturday 30th January. For those that do not like Haggis there will be a lovely Scottish Stew. The three course Scottish meal will cost adults £7.50 and children £3.50; bookings can be made on the listing in the clubhouse foyer notice board. Members who want to receive this information by e mail should let Vinny or Craig have their current e mail addresses.

Details of these events and tennis coaching courses held at the Avenue Tennis Club can be obtained from the office (01278 782758) or from the club website (www.avenuetennis.com
