School Visits – Berrow and Burnham Infants 2011

Head Coach Vinny Duddy and Club Coach Craig Phillips visited Berrow and Burnham Infants Schools to go through some fun tennis games that the teaching staff could do with the children. The pair spent 4 mornings at the 2 schools going through a variety of games (including Ghost in the Graveyard, Exterminator, Serving Battleships, etc) , which can be played indoors and would allow the children and teachers to make good use of the FREE tennis equipment that they obtained from the Tennis Foundation sponsored by Aegon. Duddy said it was really good to see so manyn kids enjoying tennis at school and he hoped that he had given the teachers some new ideas of games to play to encourage the children to play some more tennis. The coaches will be visiting the schools again during February/early March to go through the games again and to promote their Club Open Day on Sunday , 18^th Mar from 11:00 till 1:00. Duddy also wanted to remind all youngsters from 14 to 25 that the Avenue tennis club had a new membership deal, suppported by SASP (Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership) which included membership and coaching on a Tuesday evening from 7:30 till 9:00pm until Mar 12 for only £15, he said that the deal also included entry to an Olympic Ticket Draw and that if they had enough support a visit to a session from a prominent British sportsperson.

Duddy advised that Vinny’s Minis would resume on Friday 20^th Jan at 6:30. Vinny’s Minis was started in Aug 2003 in order to allow adults the opportunity to bring their children along and join in the adult coaching or social match play on Friday evenings. Due to the success of the evening the 2 hour session was split into two hour long FREE sessions for up to year group 3 children from 6:30 till 7:30 and up to year group 6 from 7:30 till 8:30. Duddy said the idea behind the evening is to have some fun on a tennis court whilst doing lots of fun games and coordination exercises with rackets, balls and any other equipment we can use. He also said it was an ideal way to introduce young children to tennis and that he would like to encourage more parents to come along to the club and try it out.

The next Adult Social Doubles Tournament will be held at the club on Sunday 29^th Jan from 11:00; Duddy said these are fairly competitive but fun events and would encourage anyone to come down to the club and have a go to see if they like competitive tennis.

Cardio Tennis is a fun, hard working and hitting fitness session a tennis court. Sessions will resume at the tennis club on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 till 8:30 – you don’t need to be a tennis player to join in these sessions – contact Vinny for more details – 01278 782758.

Avenue Junior Xmas Disco 2011

The coaches ran games to keep the kids amused and Heather Duddy made sure that the music was to their liking. Vinny also wanted to thank all the mums who came along and cooked the evening’s food and then made sure everything was cleaned up afterwards.

The club will also be the venue for a New Years Eve Glamour and Glitz Disco Night which is being run by the Grovers – (residents of the Grove where the Tennis Club is situated) – the evening will include dancing to a fantastic DJ, Canapes and a Cocktail Bar all for £10 per person (under 14s are free); tickets are available from 4 or 14 The Grove.

A new membership deal sponsored and supported by Somerset Activities and Sports Partnership (SASP) will be available to all youngsters between 14 and 25 which will include membership of the club until Mar 12, tennis lessons on a Tuesday evening from 7:30 till 9:00pm till Mar 12 and entry to an Olympic Ticket Draw – all for £15. Head Coach Vinny Duddy said this is an excellent chance for those youngsters who want to take up tennis, get some tennis lessons and join a club that has lots of events going on.

Duddy also wanted to remind parents that Junior Tennis Squads restart on Monday 9^th Jan 2012 with lessons organised every night of the week for all age groups from age 5 onwards. He also wanted to remind adults that there were courses available for them on a Thursday or Friday night and a Saturday afternoon. With probably the best tennis facilities in Somerset and lots of social play and events organised by the club for all the family Duddy thought that 2012 was a great time to get some new families down to the club.

Avenue Green Trophies Tournament 26th Sep 11

The Mini Green Trophies Tournament was held at the Avenue Tennis Club on Sunday afternoon 25^th Sep. The three players who entered were all playing in their first ever green ball tournament which sees the player playing full court with a partially decompressed ball. Mason Parker (pictured centre) managed to come out the victor on the day beating Ellie May Vohra 2 v 4, 4 v 1 and 4 v 0 having had a walk over win against Spencer Cole who had had to retire ill. Spencer had started the tournament against Ellie May and lost 4 v 2, 4 v 2 and played a marathon match of over 1 and half hours with one service game taking over 20 minutes as both players went from deuce to advantage and back. Head Coach Vinny Duddy referreed the event and applauded the players for their efforts and wanted to thank their parents for bringing them along. He said it is great to see the players move up through the LTA approved balls from Mini Red (up to age 8), to Mini Orange (8 – 9) to green ball (10) and then finally to full ball at age 11 and each of these players has done that at the Avenue. Vinny said that the different types of balls and court sizes allow the kids to learn not only good technique but also good tactics and strategies to win; the club runs tournaments for all the different age groups with the next Red (11:00am), Orange (13:00pm) and Green (15:00pm) Tournaments being run on the sames days Sunday 30^th Oct and 27^th Nov.

The club runs squad coaching for all levels of players every night of the week with either Vinny or Craig and also operates pay and play Saturday coaching sessions which run from 9:00 till 2:30pm. Head Coach Vinny Duddy said that the Pay and Play Sessions are a great way to see if you and your kids like tennis. He said we also do lessons for adults on a Friday night (beginners) and Thursday night (intermediates) or you can go along and book an individual lesson with one to the clubs coaches if working in a group is not for you. BW Controls Ltd Mini Red Rovers Tournament 18th Sep 11

Oliver Buncombe from St Josephs School in Burnham on Sea won the BW Controls Ltd Mini Red Tournament at the Avenue Tennis Club on Sunday 18^th Sep. Oliver played Tom Spink, (Mark School) in the final and managed to beat him 10 – 4. Head Coach Vinny Duddy said both boys played really well throughout the day despite the bad weather and that he was very impressed with their sportsmanship and determination to win. Both players have progressed through the club’s Junior Saturday Pay and Play and weekly squad sessions to the BW Controls Ltd Junior Red Ball Academy Squad who train twice a week as a squad and also have an individual lesson with Head Coach Vinny Duddy or club coach Craig Phillips.

A Yellow Ball and Mini Green Ball tournament will be held at the club on 24^th (1:30pm) and 25^th Sep (3:00pm) respectively. The next mini red, orange and green ball competitions at the tennis club will be on Sunday 30^th Oct from 11:00 – 1:00pm, 1:00pm till 3:00pm and 3:00pm till 5:00pm respectively. The club will also be holding a Junior Tennis Camp,daily from 9:00 am till 4:00 pm, during the next school holiday; forms are available at the club or from the website.

BW Controls Ltd Mini Red Competition 17th Jul 11

The Avenue Tennis Club hosted the BW Controls Ltd Mini Red Tournament on Sunday 17^th July which was attended by 7 budding tennis aces all under 8’s. Competing for their first times were Charlie Jackson and Tom Spinks who both did very well with Charlie wining 4 of his matches and Tom winning 1. The competition was won, once again by Megan Rundle with 6 wins who also won the Tony Pryce Mini Red Tournament the week before at Taunton. Second with 5 wins was Matthias Benischke, 3^rd was Charlie with 4 wins, Joint 4th was Oliver Buncombe and Joshua Chenylle Proctor, Joint 5^th was Dylan Webb and Tom Spinks. Head Coach Vinny Duddy ran the tournament with help from daughter Heather and said the players did a fantastic job in such difficult windy conditions and he thanked their parents for making the effort to bring them along.

The club is running a Wimbledon new members deal during July where new members can join the club for half the normal annual price. New adults will be entitled to 3 FREE Group Tennis Lessons and Junior membership includes FREE fun hour tennis sessions at Vinny’s Minis, on Friday evenings, with coaches Vinny and Nick.

During 10^th – 14^th Aug the club will be running it’s Annual Open Adult Competiion where competitors from all over the county and country will be attending to try and win the prize moneys sponsored by the Club and Haven Burnham on Sea Holiday Park. The following week (15^th – 21^st Aug) will see the 93^rd Burnham On Sea Junior Open Tennis Tournament where again juniors from all over the country will be competing in this LTA Grade 3 competition sponsored by the club and Intersport Tony Pryce. All are invited to come to the club as along with some fantastic live tennis there will be refreshments provided whilst you watch the tennis..

The Avenue Tennis Club Junior Schools Tennis Club Jun 2011

Avenue Tennis Club Head Coach Vinny Duddy and Coach Barry Ramsden ran the 2011 Junior Schools Tennis Cup at the Avenue on Thursday 23^rd June. The two coaches were assisted by Mrs Sarah Musset from King Alfreds School and Mrs Linda Ayers from Berrow School. The Tennis Cup was won by Berrow School, East Brent came second, Mark were third and the B team from Berrow school came last.

The day started with coaches taking a fun warm up and then moving on to some serving and scoring lessons. Duddy emphasised that it was important that the kids spent some time with their serves before starting the competition in order that they could actually start their games. The competition is part of the LTA and Tennis Foundations initiative to encourage some new junior players into tennis and competition with the winners invited to play against other Somerset Schools in a County Schools Final at Blackbrook on Thursday 7^th July.

Duddy said that day was a great success; he thought that the competitors were all very sporting and a credit to their schools. He said that he was surprised to see so many new faces but that he was also disappointed with the turn out as 5 of the local schools were unable to provide teams.

Duddy and Phillips will be continue their Junior Schools Tennis Blitz with visits to Brent Knoll and Churchfields during next week and wanted to remind parents that their children were all invited to come to the Avnue Tennis Club for a FREE taster session on either the Friday night Vinnys Minis session or the Saturday morning pay and play sessions.

The club will be holding it’s Open Day on Sunday 3^rd July; all are welcome to attend the FREE coaching with racket demos from Tony Pryce/Prince, Strawberries and Cream Teas, Pimms, the Somerset Mens and Ladies Closed Finals live on court and the Wimbledons Mens Final live on the large screen. A NEW Membership deal will also be available throughout July of 9 months for the price of 6, for adult membership only this will also include 3 FREE Group coaching lessons.

The next tennis camps will run during the Summer School Holidays for 3 weeks (week 1 is 25^th – 29^th July, Week 2 is 1^st – 5^th Aug and Week 3 is 22^nd – 26^th Aug. Berrow and Burnham Infants Juniors are Blitzed

Head Coach Vinny Duddy and Craig Phillips continued their Tennis Blitz tour of the local Junior Schools spending a day at Berrow and 2 days a Burnham Infants. The pair were once again greeted by lots of enthusiastic children who all seemed to enjoy the fun games and skills that the coaches took them through. Vinny said we had a fantastic time with all the children responding very well. With Wimbledon on our doorstep and Andy Murray winning Queens we are hoping to encourage more children down to the tennis club to get involved in the coaching or the Friday night fun sessions. All the children were given vouchers to attend the Friday night Vinny’s Minis session or Saturday morning pay and play coaching. Vinny was also keen to point out that the club is looking for new adult members too and advised that tennis is game that you can play together as a family. He also said why not just come down and get involved as a Social Member. The club organises lots of subsidised social events throughout the year and it’s bar is open on Monday, Wednesday, Friday nights and Sunday afternoons for all members and friends to come along. Vinny added a reminder to Berrow school parents that the club were running an Inset Day of coaching on Friday 1^st July; contact Vinny for details or see school.

BW Control Ltd Mini Red Tournament April 2011

Ellen Burrow won her first Avenue BW Controls Ltd Mini Red Rovers Tournament of the year winning all four of her matches at Aprils Tournament. Dylan Webb, Jake Cadwallader and Joshua Proctor Chenyll all competed in their first tournament along with Oliver Buncombe in his second tournament. In between matches the players were discussing what they should do during competitions, in between points, during points, etc with Head Coach Vinny Duddy. Vinny wanted to thank daughter Heather for turning up and helping to referee the matches. The next Red (under and Orange Ball (8 to under 10 year olds) tournament at the Avenue Tennis Club is on Sunday 15^h May at 11:00am, Green Ball (10 year olds) on Sunday 24^th April 11.00am and the Yellow Ball Ratings Tournament (11 years + old) on Saturday 30^th April from 1.30pm. The next Sunday Social session will be on FA Cup final day on 14^th May from around 12:30pm until 3:00pm when we will stop and watch the FA Cup final on the club’s large screen.

Megan and Harry Clean Up at Taunton

Megan Rundle and Harry Burrow from the Avenue BW Controls Ltd Mini Red Academy were both victorious at the end of the Tony Pryce Mini Red Series at Taunton Blackbrook. The event, sponsored by Tony Pryce Sports was run over 4 different weekends in 2010/2011 with the players achieving the best scores being invited to compete in the final of finals. Megan topped her pre qualifying finals in all previous 4 finals and managed to win all her matches with some very powerful serving and some excellent groundshots. Harry, who also won one of the pre qualifying events played exceptionally well and won all his matches in the grand final with one really close match at 10 v 8. Ellen Burrow, sister of Harry was also invited to compete in the girls event and managed an absolutely fantastic 2^nd place. Coach, Vinny Duddy said he was absolutely delighted for both families who have all put in the effort and commitment to achieve these fantastic results saying that both players and parents showed all the right attitudes to ensure that the players will have the opportunity to become great tennis players.

The Avenue Tennis Club organises internal competition like Friday Night junior matchplay and Sunday socials throughout the year and also organises Open competion for all ages and standards every month. The next Red (under and Orange Ball (8 to under 10 year olds) tournament at the club is on Sunday 17^th Apr at 11:00am, Green Ball (10 year olds) on Sunday 24^th April 11.00am and the Yellow Ball Ratings Tournament (11 years + old) on Saturday 30^th April from 1.30pm. The next Sunday Social session will be on FA Cup final day on 14^th May from around 12:30pm until 3:00pm when we will stop and watch the FA Cup final on the club’s large screen.

The club also runs 4 ladies teams and 6 mens teams in the North Somerset Tennis Leagues which are due to restart in early May; anyone wanting to be considered for the teams should turn up for the match practice which run on Monday and Tuesday nights from around 6:30 for men and ladies respectively.

Friday Night Junior match Play Champion March 11

Sam Stead came out of retirement to win the Avenue’s Friday Night Junior Match Play for March 11 (with 24 points) so that he could ensure that best friend Matt Barrett (last months champion) had a tougher time this month; although this month another previous champion Sam Street came close with 21 points, Tom Holder, Thom Simpson and Matt Barrett were also all in with a chance having achieved 20 points during the month; best scoring girl this month was Chloe Virgo.

Head coach, Vinny Duddy, said Sam is really good and has been playing with the adults recently, but it is nice to see him getting involved with the Junior Night again. The evening was set up to try and encourage the juniors to come down and like the adults, have some competitive and social match play with friends. We are really keen to get everyone having some good friendly competition here at the Avenue regardless of what age or standard they are.
