School Visits – Berrow and Burnham Infants 2011

Head Coach Vinny Duddy and Club Coach Craig Phillips visited Berrow and Burnham Infants Schools to go through some fun tennis games that the teaching staff could do with the children. The pair spent 4 mornings at the 2 schools going through a variety of games (including Ghost in the Graveyard, Exterminator, Serving Battleships, etc) , which can be played indoors and would allow the children and teachers to make good use of the FREE tennis equipment that they obtained from the Tennis Foundation sponsored by Aegon. Duddy said it was really good to see so manyn kids enjoying tennis at school and he hoped that he had given the teachers some new ideas of games to play to encourage the children to play some more tennis. The coaches will be visiting the schools again during February/early March to go through the games again and to promote their Club Open Day on Sunday , 18^th Mar from 11:00 till 1:00. Duddy also wanted to remind all youngsters from 14 to 25 that the Avenue tennis club had a new membership deal, suppported by SASP (Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership) which included membership and coaching on a Tuesday evening from 7:30 till 9:00pm until Mar 12 for only £15, he said that the deal also included entry to an Olympic Ticket Draw and that if they had enough support a visit to a session from a prominent British sportsperson.

Duddy advised that Vinny’s Minis would resume on Friday 20^th Jan at 6:30. Vinny’s Minis was started in Aug 2003 in order to allow adults the opportunity to bring their children along and join in the adult coaching or social match play on Friday evenings. Due to the success of the evening the 2 hour session was split into two hour long FREE sessions for up to year group 3 children from 6:30 till 7:30 and up to year group 6 from 7:30 till 8:30. Duddy said the idea behind the evening is to have some fun on a tennis court whilst doing lots of fun games and coordination exercises with rackets, balls and any other equipment we can use. He also said it was an ideal way to introduce young children to tennis and that he would like to encourage more parents to come along to the club and try it out.

The next Adult Social Doubles Tournament will be held at the club on Sunday 29^th Jan from 11:00; Duddy said these are fairly competitive but fun events and would encourage anyone to come down to the club and have a go to see if they like competitive tennis.

Cardio Tennis is a fun, hard working and hitting fitness session a tennis court. Sessions will resume at the tennis club on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 till 8:30 – you don’t need to be a tennis player to join in these sessions – contact Vinny for more details – 01278 782758.

Berrow Inset Day – July 11

Avenue Coaches Vinny Duddy and Barry Ramsden ran a Tennis Camp on Friday 1^st Jul for the Berrow Infants School Inset Day. The coaches had expected a much larger turn out than the 3 juniors who came but with some fantastic weather and a good desire to learn shown by the players the day was a great success. The day was ran much the same way as the School Holiday Tennis Camps with focus on the technique and stroke play through some drills and games.

The club is running a Wimbledon new members deal during July where new members can join the club for half the normal annual price. New adults will be entitled to 3 FREE Group Tennis Lessons and Junior membership includes FREE fun hour tennis sessions, on Friday evenings, with coaches Vinny and Nick.

The next BW Controls Ltd Red Ball Tournament is on Sunday 17^th July from 11:00 with a Mini Orange Ball Tournament organised for Sunday afternoon from 1:00pm, Yellow is on 23^rd July and a Green ball on the 24^th July.

Forms are now available for the Junior Tennis Camp which will run for 3 weeks over the school summer holidays on weeks 25^th to 29^th July, 1^st to 5^th Aug and 22^nd to 26^th Aug.

The Avenue Tennis Club Junior Schools Tennis Club Jun 2011

Avenue Tennis Club Head Coach Vinny Duddy and Coach Barry Ramsden ran the 2011 Junior Schools Tennis Cup at the Avenue on Thursday 23^rd June. The two coaches were assisted by Mrs Sarah Musset from King Alfreds School and Mrs Linda Ayers from Berrow School. The Tennis Cup was won by Berrow School, East Brent came second, Mark were third and the B team from Berrow school came last.

The day started with coaches taking a fun warm up and then moving on to some serving and scoring lessons. Duddy emphasised that it was important that the kids spent some time with their serves before starting the competition in order that they could actually start their games. The competition is part of the LTA and Tennis Foundations initiative to encourage some new junior players into tennis and competition with the winners invited to play against other Somerset Schools in a County Schools Final at Blackbrook on Thursday 7^th July.

Duddy said that day was a great success; he thought that the competitors were all very sporting and a credit to their schools. He said that he was surprised to see so many new faces but that he was also disappointed with the turn out as 5 of the local schools were unable to provide teams.

Duddy and Phillips will be continue their Junior Schools Tennis Blitz with visits to Brent Knoll and Churchfields during next week and wanted to remind parents that their children were all invited to come to the Avnue Tennis Club for a FREE taster session on either the Friday night Vinnys Minis session or the Saturday morning pay and play sessions.

The club will be holding it’s Open Day on Sunday 3^rd July; all are welcome to attend the FREE coaching with racket demos from Tony Pryce/Prince, Strawberries and Cream Teas, Pimms, the Somerset Mens and Ladies Closed Finals live on court and the Wimbledons Mens Final live on the large screen. A NEW Membership deal will also be available throughout July of 9 months for the price of 6, for adult membership only this will also include 3 FREE Group coaching lessons.

The next tennis camps will run during the Summer School Holidays for 3 weeks (week 1 is 25^th – 29^th July, Week 2 is 1^st – 5^th Aug and Week 3 is 22^nd – 26^th Aug. Head Coach Vinny Duddy and Craig Phillips continued their Tennis Blitz tour of the local Junior Schools spending a day at Berrow and 2 days a Burnham Infants. The pair were once again greeted by lots of enthusiastic children who all seemed to enjoy the fun games and skills that the coaches took them through. Vinny said we had a fantastic time with all the children responding very well. With Wimbledon on our doorstep and Andy Murray winning Queens we are hoping to encourage more children down to the tennis club to get involved in the coaching or the Friday night fun sessions. All the children were given vouchers to attend the Friday night Vinny’s Minis session or Saturday morning pay and play coaching. Vinny was also keen to point out that the club is looking for new adult members too and advised that tennis is game that you can play together as a family. He also said why not just come down and get involved as a Social Member. The club organises lots of subsidised social events throughout the year and it’s bar is open on Monday, Wednesday, Friday nights and Sunday afternoons for all members and friends to come along. Vinny added a reminder to Berrow school parents that the club were running an Inset Day of coaching on Friday 1^st July; contact Vinny for details or see school.

Vinny and Craig Serve Up Tennis in the Junior Schools

Avenue Tennis Coaches Vinny Duddy and Craig Phillips served up tennis lessons every day of the week from 9:00 till 3:00 in St Andrews,St Josephs and Mark Junior Schools. The pair gave fun tennis taster sessions to over 750 children during the week and both said that they really enjoyed the experience and thought that it was probably one of the best weeks in their coahing life so far, but very tiring. The sessions are aimed at introducing tennis to juniors prior to the Clubs Open Day on the 3^rd of July and the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament. The sessions were all around an hour long with the teachers and students all having some fun, especially in the fun games of Jail Break, Ghost in the Graveyard and Exterminator at the end. Vinny and Craig wanted to thank all the kids and teachers for their support and enthusiasm. All the kids were given FREE tennis vouchers to attend the club on a Friday Evening for Vinny’s Minis or on a Saturday morning for a free coaching session.

The next tournament at the club will be the preliminary rounds of the Somerset Closed, on 4^th/5^th Jun where players (ladies and men) will compete in a singles and doubles competition; the club invites you to come down and watch the best players in Somerset battle it out to be the Somerset Champion. A junior yellow ball and green ball tournament will be held on Saturday 28^th and Sunday 29^th May respectively. A Mini Red and Orange tournament will be held on Sunday 12^th Jun from 11:00 and 13:00 hrs respectively.

A School Holiday Junior Tennis Camp will be run from Tuesday 31^st May till 3^rd June from 9:00 am till 4:00pm; bookings can be made daily or for the whole week – forms are available from the club’s website – www.avenuetennis.com please book up early to avoid any disappointments. East Brent School Visit 5th May 11

As part of the Avenue Tennis Clubs attempts to encourage more players into tennis and to become part the Avenue Tennis Club which now has a 102 years of history as a community club in Burham, East Brent School Year Group 3’s visited the the Club for a fun morning of tennis with coaches Vinny Duddy and Craig Phillips. The coaches took the kids through a series of warm up and coordination exercises and then went through forehand and backhand shots with the ultimate aim of ensuring the kids could finish off the session with the ability to play two fun games – Ghost in the Graveyard and Jail Break. The club has offered to do the same for all the local schools in Burnham but a stumbling block has been the lack of funds in the schools to provide transport to the club so if there are any locals who would like to support their childrens class then please either contact Vinny Duddy at the club or go directly to school, although there have been discussions with Burnham Infants about walking to the club.

The coaches also attended East Brent School on Thursday 5^th May and spent the day there going through racket skills and games to show the kids to see that you don’t actually need a tennis court to have some fun with a racket and ball. The club are due to visit Lympsham School on Wednesday 11^th May and have confirmed dates at Burnham Infants, St Andrews, Mark, St Josephs, Berrow and Churfields – the club would like to remind parents that the children are all given vouchers offering a FREE session at the club on either the Friday night Vinny’s Minis or on a Coaching Session on Saturday mornings to give them another opportunity to see if tennis is for them.

The next Sunday Social session will actually be on Saturday 14^th May from around 12:30pm until 3:00pm so that we can ensure that all members who can’t make it on Sundays get the opportunity to take part in our fun social doubles tournament; for those players who are interested we will stop around 3:00 ish to watch the FA Cup final on the club’s large screen – Man City and Stoke City.

On Sunday 15^th May from 11:00am the next BW Controls Ltd Mini Red (under Tournament will be held. An Orange Ball (8 to under 10 year olds) tournament will also be held later in the afternoon from around 1:00pm; numbers permitting. Avenue Tennis Club After School Tennis Club @ Burnham Infants

Burnham Infants School have just started an After School Tennis Club with Avenue Tennis Club Head Coach Vinny Duddy. The budding Andy Murrays and one Maria Sharapova from Burnham Infants School will be introduced to tennis at their school with a variety of tennis racket ball skills and fun games. The Avenue Coaches currently do After School Tennis Clubs at Mark, Berrow and Lympsham. During the next few months Avenue coaches, Duddy and Phillips, will be at Berrow, Burnham Infants, Churchfields, East Brent, Lympsham, Mark, St Andrews and St Josephs doing the club’s Tennis Blitz aimed at introducing children to how much fun tennis can be. The club are also putting on a free morning of tennis coaching and fun at the club for East Brent for the second year running. Head Coach Duddy said this is really good fun for the kids as they get a morning away from school at the tennis club having some fun and learning some new skills and games. Although all the schools have been invited to take up this opportunity, they have been unable to make it to the club as transport costs cannot be met out of their budgets; Duddy would like to invite some local business men to support their childs school and see if they can get some more of them down to the tennis club.

Duddy is also keen to remind parents that tennis is a great sport for all the family to play together and would like to remind parents that the club has probably the best facilities in Somerset and thtat they run junior coaching squads every night of the week.. The club run free organised fun sessions on a Friday Night for members from 6:30 to 7:30 (up to age and 7:30 to 8:30 (age 8 to 10). For the older juniors, Friday night is Junior Match Play Night where those members over 11 play doubles for the Junior Monthly Match Play Trophy run by the juniors and for adults there is social doubles and the bar is open.

The next social doubles tournament at the tennis club will be on Sunday 20^th Mar from around 11:00am till 1:00pm (ish) with some snacks provided afterwards in the bar – cost to adults £2:00 – invited juniors £1:00 – all new potential members are welcome to attend and play.

The next Junior Tournaments to be held at the Club will be on Saturday 26^th Mar from 1:30 onwards for yellow ball juniors and the BW Controls Ltd Red Ball Tournament will take place on Sunday 27^th Mar from 11:00 am.

The Avenue Tennis Club will also be holding a St Patrick’s Night celebration on Saturday 26^th Mar from 7:30pm at a cost of £10 per head which will include a glass of Black Velvet on arrival and lots of home cooked Irish Fare; all are welcome to attend but please sign up in the clubhouse or contact Poo Jenkins on 01278 783396 so that we can organize food.

MARK YEAR GROUP 2 VISIT THE AVENUE TENNIS CLUB OCT 10

Mark School visited the Avenue Tennis Club for a morning of fun tennis training with the Avenue’s Tennis Coaches Vinny Duddy and Craig Phillips. The coaches warmed the kids up with a series of fun tennis related movement and coordination exercises from Mines to Thomas the Tank. A fair bit of the morning was spent teaching Year 2 how to do forehands and backhands in order that they could finish the 3 hour session off with some fun tennis games (Ghost in the Graveyard and Jail Break).

Head Coach, Vinny Duddy, said this is the second school we have had in for the morning at the tennis club and it is great fun. It’s an adventure for the kids as they are coming out of their school environment and coming to our club where it is far easier to teach them. We are hoping that by getting the kids to the tennis club we will encourage them to come back and get involved in the tennis squads which take place throughout the week. I am really surprised that we have not had more local schools in Burnham who have all been invited to take up a morning of tennis coaching free of charge at the tennis club.

A NEW MEMBERSHIP offer is available to all new members joining during November – 5 MONTHS FOR THE PRICE OF 3 (so juniors under 10 will be charged £7.50 until the end of March, over 10’s £11.25, Adults £50, Families £90).

We will be having our Annual Xmas Lunch on Sunday 5^th Dec; all are welcome and should put their names up on the list in the clubhouse foyer.

The Avenue Tennis Club is a friendly, family oriented organisation whose members enjoy excellent facilities with 8 floodlit courts and a large clubhouse including bar facilities. Friday nights is family night where members and non members are encouraged to come down to either the adult coaching or club doubles match play. Junior members enjoy free organised fun tennis sessions for up to school year 3 from 6:30pm till 7:30pm, school year 4 and upwards from 7:30pm to 8:30pm. School year 7+ members have organised match-play from 8:00pm. Avenue School Visits 2010

Avenue Tennis Coaches Vinny Duddy and Craig Phillips have been very lucky with the weather during their visits to local schools and are certain that after the sessions they managed to ensure that all kids now know how much fun tennis can be and are hopeful that they will encourage some aspiring Andy Murrays to take up tennis at the Avenue, Brent Knoll and Lympsham Tennis Clubs.

The pair have visited East Brent, Berrow, Burnham Infants, Beechfields, Mark, St Andrews, St Josephs and will complete their last Tennis Taster Session of the year at Brent Knoll School on Tuesday 22^nd Jun.

The coaches took the kids through a variety of coordination games and racket skills ending the sessions off with fun games where time permitted. All the children were invited back to the Avenue Tennis Club for a FREE tennis session on either a Friday night (Vinny’s Minis) or to come along to one of the Saturday morning pay and play coaching sessions. Vinny thought the sessions were a great success and wanted to thank all the teachers and their assistants who came out onto the school’s playgrounds joining in with the kids and assisting on the day.

On Jun 23^rd the Avenue Tennis Club will host the Burnham on Sea Junior Tennis Cup and will provide the schools that attend with some further training which will finish off with an Inter School Competition which will see the winners heading off to Blackbrook in Taunton to compete in the Somerset School’s Junior Tennis Cup.

The next major event at the Tennis Club will be the Open Day with FREE coaching and fun games organised by the club’s coaching team. The Somerset Men’s Closed final will be played at the club live from 12:30 and should be finished in time to watch the Wimbledon’s Men’s Final which will be shown on the large screen. The bar will be open serving Strawberries and Cream; club chairman Gordon Hunter will be providing his infamous Pimms cocktail to all who wish to partake.
