The pair have visited East Brent, Berrow, Burnham Infants, Beechfields, Mark, St Andrews, St Josephs  and will complete their last Tennis Taster Session of the year at Brent Knoll School on Tuesday 22^nd Jun. 

The coaches took the kids through a variety of coordination games and racket skills ending the sessions off with fun games where time permitted.  All the children were invited back to the Avenue Tennis Club for a FREE tennis session on either a Friday night (Vinny’s Minis) or to come along to one of the Saturday morning pay and play coaching sessions.  Vinny thought the sessions were a great success and wanted to thank all the teachers and their assistants who came out onto the school’s playgrounds joining in with the kids and assisting on the day.

On Jun 23^rd the Avenue Tennis Club will host the Burnham on Sea Junior Tennis Cup and will provide the schools that attend with some further training which will finish off with an Inter School Competition which will see the winners heading off to Blackbrook in Taunton to compete in the Somerset School’s Junior Tennis Cup.

The next major event at the Tennis Club will be the Open Day with FREE coaching and fun games organised by the club’s coaching team.  The Somerset Men’s Closed final will be played at the club live from 12:30 and should be finished in time to watch the Wimbledon’s Men’s Final which will be shown on the large screen.  The bar will be open serving Strawberries and Cream; club chairman Gordon Hunter will be providing his infamous Pimms cocktail to all who wish to partake.

Junior tennis Camp - July 2009

The Avenue Tennis Club hosted the Burnham-on-Sea Junior Tennis Cup on Wednesday 17th June. Two schools, Berrow and East Huntspill, attended and took part in a coaching session and competition which saw Berrow come out winners on the day.

Head coach Vinny Duddy, Craig Phillips and Barry Ramsden took the juniors through a series of coaching exercises during the morning session which saw them doing forehand, backhand and serving drills, leading to a singles competition later in the day. Everyone enjoyed themselves including the teachers and parents who came to the club when the coaches finished off the session with a fun game called Jail Break.

The next major event at the Tennis Club will be the Annual Open Day on the 5th July, starting around 11:00 am. The day will be attended by Tony Pryce Sports, Prince Rackets Demonstration team and the Lucozade Sports Science Team. There will be free coaching and fun games for all the family, the bar will be open serving hot and cold drinks, food will be available together with Strawberries, Cream and Pimms which will be served during the Wimbledon Men’s Final which will be shown on large screen in the Tennis club.

The tennis club is also celebrating its Centenary Year and will be organizing a Centenary Open Day on Saturday 19th Sep and an Open Tournament on Sunday 20th Sep. The following weekend, 26th September, is the Centenary Ball; the black tie event will have dancing to a DJ and local band Riverbrew in a Marquee set up at the tennis club. Tickets are priced at £40 and will include a meal and a complimentary drink which can be obtained at the club.

Avenue Head Coach Vinny Duddy started up the Junior Tennis Cup in October last year with the objective of getting the schools to nominate their talented players and allow them to come to the Avenue Tennis Club and play in a competition against other Burnham Junior Schools.  The cup was won by St Josephs of last year.

The next Centenary Event will be run on 30^th May, which is FA Cup Final Day, when an Adult and Junior Tennis Tournament will be run prior to watching the big match at the Tennis Club.

Tony Pryce Sports Shop in Taunton will be at the Avenue tennis Club, 6:30 on the 5^th June to give members and anyone who wants to attend the opportunity to try out some of this year’s new tennis rackets – all are welcome to attend and try them out.

The sessions were run for an hour at a time with each year group being put through their paces with some racket, sending and receiving skills in either the small gym or outside in the cold windy playground.

Vinny and Craig were really pleased with the year groups 4 and 5 who really made some progress with their forehands and backhands in the short time that they had.  Although it must be said that this school has a thriving Tennis after School Club were these skills have been practiced for the last couple of terms.

The sessions are funded through the Somerset LTA and backed by King Alfred’s Jean Paul Hoskins and Sarah Musset and at the time of writing Vinny and Craig have been to East Brent, Berrow, Brent Knoll, Lympsham, Beechfields and St Josephs.  Still to go are Mark, Burnham Infants and St John’s.

At the end of each session the children were offered a free hours coaching voucher to be taken at the Avenue Tennis Club on either a Friday at Vinny’s Minis or at the Saturday morning pay and play sessions.

The Avenue Tennis Club will be running another Junior Tennis Camp during the Easter school holidays following the success of the last one held in February.  The camp will run on both weeks of the holiday (Mon – Thur & Tue – Fri).  Bookings for both weeks, 1 week or on a daily basis can be done through the office on 01278 782758.

The sessions went down so well that Mrs Nicky Elsom (Head Teacher) asked if it was possible if she could send one of year groups down to the Avenue Tennis Club to experience the sport in a proper tennis environment. 

Year Group 3 turned up in a coach from the school along with teacher Mrs Cox, assistants Mrs Right and Mrs Crocker raring to go.  Coaches Vinny and Craig then took them through a series of warm ups exercises, racket drills and skills followed by games aimed at exercising what the children had learned during the session. 

Craig and Vinny were really pleased with the outcome and in the final game of the day (“Jailbreak – where children have to complete a forehand and backhand stroke over and in.  Failure to do results in them going to jail and waiting to be released by one of their friends succeeding in the task and then the Jailbreak takes place with the Jailors (the teachers) firing balls at the prisoners to stop them escaping).

During one of the early team sessions Craig and his team pictured, managed to win against the other three teams by successfully circuiting the court and not having any problems with their East Brent Hamburgers.

Head coach Duddy said that this was an excellent day and really useful for the kids as they were in the right environment to learn to play tennis safely and with enough space to swing rackets and hit tennis balls.  One of the assistants whose daughter attended the session was surprised that the membership fees were so cheap for juniors at £25, £35 or £42 per year, age dependant – with all junior members eligible to attend Vinny’s Minis on Friday nights for free.

Vinny and Craig were both moved by the kindness of the children who attended the sessions as they all wrote letters to them with drawings thanking them for the session.
