Summer Holiday Tennis Squads 2010   from for summer holiday eveing tennis squads

At 12:30 all the coaching stopped so that the Somerset Closed Finalists could play their match to find out who would be Somerset’s Number 1.  Matt Barnard, Somerset Men’s Captain pictured on the right above took on the Avenue’s Coach, Craig Phillips from Brean in a really super hard hitting fast match.  Matt used all his experience to make the match difficult for Craig but in the end Craig’s hard and accurate ground strokes proved too much with Craig running out as winner in two sets (6 v 3, 6 v 4).   Matt and Craig were very considerate to the on lookers finishing their match just in time to watch Rafa Nadal take on Thomas Berdych on the Avenue’s large screen.  Vinny passed on thanks to Tony Pryce Sports who sponsored the prize monies for the tournament and to Prince Rackets demosntrator Peter Clarke for their attendance at the club’s Open day.

The club is running a Wimbledon new members deal during July where new members can join the club for the next 9 months for the price of 6.  Effectively this means the cost per day for a new adult member is 36 pence (£100 per 9 months) with an under 10 being only 5 pence per day (£15 for 9 months).

The Summer Holiday Camp will run from Monday 26th July to Friday 5th Aug with qualified LTA coaches taking the youngsters through a variety of tennis strokes whilst normally finishing off the sessions with some fun games and/or match play.

Timings are from 09:00 am till 03:00 pm daily (excluding weekend).

You should make sure that your child has plenty to drink and has lots of snacks included with their daly packed lunch.  The club’s bar will be opened after the children have finished their lunches.  Please ensure they also have wet weather clothing as the coaches will try and ensure that the kids are on court for as long as possible.

The Avenue Tennis Club will be holding its Annual Open Day on Sunday 4th July 2010 starting at 10:30. A new membership deal will be available to all during the month of July which will include 3 FREE Group coaching sessions and 9 months membership for the price of 6.

The day will start with FREE coaching for all juniors and adults from 10:30 till 12:30. At 12:30 visitors and members will be able to either continue playing tennis on courts 5 – 8 or to watch the Somerset Closed Men’s Tennis Final live on Court 2 next to the club house.

During the day exhibitors from Tony Pryce Sports and Prince Rackets will be available to demonstrate and advise on new tennis rackets and sports wear. There will be Strawberries and Cream, Pimms, hot and cold food and the Avenue’s well stocked bar will be open to all throughout.

The Final of the Wimbledon Men’s Final will be shown on the large screen in the clubhouse and all are welcome to attend this.

Head coach, Vinny Duddy, ran the course and thought that all the juniors put in a lot of effort, concentration and personal time to take the course and was particularly pleased that 5 of 6 came from the Avenue’s own Tennis Academy.  As well as doing the 4 modules the  juniors are also expected to complete a minimum 18 hours volunteering in last 3 modules above.  Vinny gave them some specific tasks for the Club Media and Communcations module which are nearly all complete, they have been assisting the coaching staff with the weekday squad and weekend coaching (something all of them are finding very rewarding and great fun).  For the last module the group decided to run a Junior Tennis Competition for 11 to 16 year olds at the Avenue on a date to be confirmed in the near future; if you are interested then please visit the website, the club or see the kids at King Alfred’s for more details.  Now that they have completed their courses they will be allowed to assist with the coaching at the tennis club, under the guidance of the coaches, and will charge for their time, details can be obtained from the office.

An Introduction to Digital Photography evening has been organised at the tennis club on 27^th April from 7:00 pm to 9:30pm at a cost of £20; details of the itinerary can be obtained from the website or you can book to attend the evening by ringing the office on 01278 782758.  The evening is being run by former local boy Simon Plant who is an award winning photographer in his own right; his work has been published world wide and he was shortlisted in 2009 for Landscape Photographer of the Year.

The next social event at the Tennis Club is an Italian Evening on Saturday 15^th May at 7:30 ish; all are welcome to attend.

ST PADDIES NIGHT AT THE AVENUE

St Paddies Night at the Avenue saw an Air Guitar performance from youngsters James Cameron, Cameron and Jarrod Nell assisted by DJ Slimboy Fat’s colleague Jim.   

Head coach Vinny Duddy said the night was really good fun and the DJ and his colleague Jim made a really good effort to give everyone a good time, playing a wide range of music.  He praised the efforts made by club members Julie Cameron, Lynn O Dell and Jane Sanders who spent a lot of time preparing, serving and then clearing up afterwards and was a little disappointed that more members did not turn up to support their efforts.  The food on the evening was excellent with dumplings and Irish Stew (dumplings by Pooh Jenkins) followed by Baileys Bread and Butter Pudding which at £8 for adults and £4 for children was excellent value as this included the cost of the disco.

The Lazy Town Tennis Party was severely impacted by the bad weather on Friday night and therefore was not well attended too.  Duddy said the rain just kept falling right up to 6:30 and therefore most people decided to stay in and support Sport Relief on the TV.  However there were several youngsters who did attend and had made the effort to get sponsored, in particular Liam Reddish who almost filled up his sponsorship sheet.  Friday nights is normally family night with Vinny’s Minis, Junior Matchplay, Adult Coaching and Adult Social play throughout the evening. The bar is also open for those who would prefer to stay in the warm and watch so why not go down to the Avenue and see if it’s for you and your family.

Despite withdrawal of funding by the British LTA the Avenue Tennis Club coaches have offered to visit all the schools in Burnham on Sea giving Tennis Taster Sessions to all the children during their school day.  So far Berrow, Brent Knoll, Burnham Infants, East Brent and St Joseph’s have confirmed their dates with East Brent organising a whole morning for their English Lesson down at the Tennis Club in May.  Duddy said last year we did a fun session for East Brent’s year 3 and the following week received letters of thanks written by each of the children; it was one of those “attending your child’s first nativity play moments” for both Duddy and Phillips who were both really moved by the efforts made by the kids.

Lazy Town Tennis Party 19^th March 2010

As part of the drive to encourage more families and new members down to the Avenue Tennis Club the Avenue juniors

are going to participate in a Lazy Town Sport Relief sponsorship evening on Friday 19^th March, where they will be encouraging their mums, dads, uncles, aunties and any friends to come down to the club and have a “FREE” coaching session with the club’s coaching team.  Friday nights is normally family night with Vinny’s Minis, Junior Matchplay, Adult Coaching and Adult Social play throughout the evening. The bar is also open for those who would prefer to stay in the warm and watch.

Head Coach Vinny Duddy said “ we want to encourage families to the club as they are the players for the future of the club.  In these times where it is expensive to do things as a family, membership at the club is relatively inexpensive and is also a great way to get together as a family and do something.  Tennis is a great game for all the family to play regardless of your age differences and ability.  Vinny also said that he had invited all the mothers from Sarah Coles Music with Mummy classes, which are held at the club on Tuesday and Wednesday, to come on down to club with either a friend or partner to have FREE tennis lessons on any of the Friday evenings in March from 6:30 to 8:00 and was surprised at the interest.

The Avenue Tennis Club is offering new members the opportunity to join the tennis club during March and pay the 2009 membership prices for a full year membership till Mar 2011, but this is subject to the new member completing a direct debit mandate that would start from the 1 April 2010.  Details can also be obtained from new membership secretary Di Dimond (07979 227866).
