BW Controls Ltd Mini Red Tournament Nov 11

Head Coach Vinny Duddy was very pleased to see Matthias Benishcke from the Avenue’s Junior Tennis Academy win the last BW Controls Ltd Mini Red Tournament of 2011.

Matthias won all 6 of his matches against 4 players from within the club and 2 from other clubs. Charlie Jackson, Presha Kumar, James Coogan all tied for 2^nd place with 4 wins each, with other players Tom Spinks, Josh Chenylle-Proctor and Dylan Webb completing the other entrants. Duddy said the standard was very good and thought that all the kids did very well in fairly windy conditions; Dylan Webb won the prize for best Sportsman on the day. Later that afternoon Mason Parker beat Ellie May Vohra in the Green Ball event (6v3, 6v0) in a very well contested event which saw Mason taking control of the match with some powerful forehands and accurate serving; although Ellie May played some very good tactical points moving Mason out of position several times before finishing the points off. Junior Tournaments will return to the club on 13^th Feb 2012.

Head Coach Vinny Duddy said the new adult membership deal has been very successful encouraging quite a few new players down to the club. The club have decided to continue with the promotion until the end of this year; included in the membership offer are 10 FREE tennis lessons on a Saturday afternoon from 2:00 till 3:30 for a cost of £50. Membership of the club allows players free use of the courts, access to an excellent club house with superb facilities (including wi-fi and a large screen), a competitively priced and extensively stocked bar, access to reduced coaching rates, reduced room hire rates and to be part of Community based club that organises several social events throughout the year, as well as internal club tournaments and social play mornings and evenings.

The club will be holding a Junior Tennis Camp during the first week of the school holidays (19^th – 23^rd Dec) from 9:00 till 4:00 pm; please see club website for booking forms (www.aveneutennis.com)

The club’s Annual Family Xmas Lunch will be held on Sunday 4^th Dec (12:30 for 1:00pm); everyone is reminded to book up early for this very popular event which is excellent value for money at £10 per adult and £5 for under 12’s; please put your name up on the list on the club’s notice board. Chairman’s Mince Pies Sunday will be held on 18^th December from 12:30 onwards; all are invited to attend.

The club will also be the venue for the a New Years Eve Glamour and Glitz Ball which is being run by the Grovers – (residents of the Grove where the Tennis Club is situated) – the evening will include dancing to a DJ, Canapes and a Cocktail Bar all for £10 per person (under 14s are free); more details available on the club website – www.avenuetennis.com.

Captain’s Dinner 2011

Cheers and good health from the Avenue Tennis Club, Men’s Captain’s wife, Mel Belfield during the club’s annual dinner for members and friends. Captains Richard Belfield and Lynn O’Dell both organised a great event and thanked Mike Wooley and Tim Deane who performed some great acoustic music during the evening, the Party People for the food and service and everyone on the evening for coming. Richard made a special thanks to retiring Treasurer Richard Powell who has worked tirelessly managing the affairs of the club for a long time, together with special thanks to club ladies Poo Jenkins and Julie Cameron for all the help they gave Lynn during the day.

Duddy and Craig Phillips also attended Burnham Infants School on Monday and Tuesday where they taught the teachers and their assistants, with the help of Year 1 and 2 children some tennis games that they could do with the children in their indoor hall with the FREE tennis equipment that they had received from the LTA and Tennis Foundation. Duddy hoped that it would encourage the teachers to provide some tennis at the school which in turn might encourage them to have some more focused training at the Avenue where Junior Coaching is available every night of the week (members £3.75 or non members £4.25 per session). Duddy and Phillips are also attending Berrow Infants next week and have offered to do the same at some of the other schools in Burnham.

The club will be holding another Social Sunday Mixed Doubles Tournament on Sunday 20^th Nov in memory of Jan Mackay a former member at the club; all are welcome to attend and play with play scheduled to begin around 11:00 and complete around 1:00 with the bar open for refreshment afterwards – see website – www.avenuetennis.com.

Duddy will also be running a Mini Red (11:00 till 1:00), a Mini Orange (1:00 till 3:00) and a Green Ball Tournament on Sunday 27^th Nov; anyone wishing to play should contact him at the club.

New Membership Offer Nov 2011

The Avenue Tennis Club is running a new adult membership deal which will see new adults receiving full membership from Nov 11 till Mar 12. Included in the membership offer are 10 FREE tennis lessons on a Saturday afternoon from 2:00 till 3:30 and all for a cost of £50. Avenue Tennis Head Coach Vinny Duddy said he hoped this was a good offer that would encourage more new players down to the club to either begin tennis or just get back into it. Membership of the club allows players free use of the courts, access to an excellent club house with superb facilities (including wi-fi and a large screen), a competitively priced and extensively stocked bar, access to reduced coaching rates, reduced room hire rates and to be part of Community based club that organises several social events throughout the year, as well as internal club tournaments and social play mornings and evenings.

Ron Hines Tournament October 11

16 players from the Avenue Tennis Club competed in the Ron Hines Memorial Trophy. The players all played 4 matches (best of 7 games, first to 4) which ended up with Head Coach Vinny Duddy, Carey Vohra, Josh Lutner and Pat Hunter playing in the final with Duddy and Vohra coming out winners 6 games to 4. 3^rd and 4^th playoff was won by Lee Fowler and Poo Jenkins against Club Coach Barry Ramsden and Heather Duddy. Ladies Captain, Lynn O’Dell and Steve Perry ended 5^th beating Colin Christison and Jo Fox into 6^th by winning 6 games to 5. Heinz Schroeder and Vanessa Chenylle Proctor beat Dave Scooby Vennall and Julie Fowler 6 games to 3. The next social Mixed Doubles Tournament will be on Sunday 20^th November from 11:00 which is the Jan Mackay Memorial Tournament. The club will also be holding a junior yellow ball competition on Saturday 29^th October; contact Barry Ramsden. On Sunday 30^th October Vinny Duddy will be running a Mini Red Competition (from 11:00 am), Mini Orange (from 13:00) and a Mini Green (from 15:00).

Halloween at the Avenue Tennis Club

The Avenue Tennis Club saw some scary children dressed as Witches, Warlocks and Dracula at the Music with Mummy sessions run by Sarah Coles. Music with Mummy & Jolly Babies sessions, aimed at babies, toddlers & pre school children are run on a Tuesday and Wednesday at the Tennis Club; anyone who wants to join these fun sessions should contact Sarah Cole on 07977 591847.

New Membership Deal Nov 11

The club will also be holding a Junior Tennis Camp, daily from 9:00 am till 4:00 pm, during the next school holiday (24^th – 28^th Oct); forms are available at the club or from the website (www.avenuetennis.com).

On the 23^rd Oct the club will be holding the Ron Hines Memorial Social Mixed Doubles Competition which all are invited to come along and play. Play will start around 11:00am after the Rugby World Cup Final which will also be shown on the club’s large screen.

The Club’s A and C team were in action over weekend with both of them taking on very strong Clevedon opponents. The A team of Glen Pigden, Adam Teague, Jessica Griffiths and Rhiannon Parsons were beaten 10-1 with the scoreline not reflecting the closeness of the matches which nearly all went to tie breaks sets. The C team of Colin Christison, Vinny Duddy, Heather Duddy and Kelly Ann Vennal lost 8 – 4 with Christison and Vennal winning their mixed in 3 sets and Duddy and Duddy losing their mixed in 3, both girls played really well in the ladies match losing in three sets.

Megan wins Bournemouth Open

Megan Rundle from the Avenue Tennis Club Academy pictured with participants from the first week of the Avenue’s Summer Holiday Tennis Camp displaying her latest trophy after a fantastic win at the Bournemouth Open which is an LTA grade 3 competition. Megan came second in her box to play the winner of the other box of 4 girls in the semi final and at 9 – 7 down played well under pressure to take the next 4 points, needed to win by 2 clear points. The standard was very high throughout the tournament and Megan played the final against the girl who had beaten her in her first box match 11 – 9; this time Megan kept her cool and used her power and control to win the final 10-6. Parents Scott and Clare said we are very proud of her achievements over the last year as she has now won over 12 tournaments with this one being the furthest she has travelled to. Megan’s Coach and Avenue’s Head Coach Vinny Duddy said that this was really great and that he was really pleased for Megan who has really worked hard to get to where she is. He said he was really pleassed for Scott and Claire, Megans parents who are also both making a huge commitment in getting Megan to her training and more importatntly off to the tournaments around the county and country. Vinny was also able to give Megan a large Adidas Andy Murray poster from Tony Pryce Sports.

Forms are available via the website or from the club house for the Summer Holiday Junior Tennis Camp which will run for 3 weeks over the school summer holidays on weeks 25^th to 29^th July, 1^st to 5^th Aug and 22^nd to 26^th Aug, please book early to avoid disappointment.

The club is running a Wimbledon new members deal during July where new members can join the club for half the normal annual price. New adults will be entitled to 3 FREE Group Tennis Lessons and Junior membership includes FREE fun hour tennis sessions at Vinny’s Minis, on Friday evenings, with coaches Vinny and Nick.

During 10^th – 14^th Aug the club will be running it’s Annual Open Adult Competiion where competitors from all over the county and country will be attending to try and win the prize moneys sponsored by the Club and Haven Burnham on Sea Holiday Park. The following week (15^th – 21^st Aug) will see the 93^rd Burnham On Sea Junior Open Tennis Tournament where again juniors from all over the country will be competing in this LTA Grade 3 competition sponsored by the club and Intersport Tony Pryce. Why not come along to the Avenue and watch some fantastic tennis whilst having your lunch or brunch at the tennis club as hot and cold food will be served throughout the days of the tournaments.

Somerset Closed Champions 2011

The Somerset Closed Tennis Finals were played at the Avenue Tennis Club on Sunday 3^rd July. Martin Hoyland beat Craig Phillips (Avenue Club Coach and last years winner) 6 v 4, 6 v 4, in a very hard hitting exciting final which was watched by over 60 people who had stayed on to enjoy the live tennis after the Club’s Open Day. Head Coach Vinny Duddy said the final was fantastic with both players playing some excellent tennis in the searing heat of mid day; he said it was even more pleasing that both players were both from the Avenue Tennis Club. The Somerset Closed Doubles Finals were played almost immediately and once again featured the Avenue Tennis Players Martin and Craig who won against Somerset Men’s Captain Matt Bernard and the Somerset and Dorset Tennis Development Manager James Deem (7 v 5, 6 v 2). Duddy added that he wanted to thank all the Tournament Committee but in particular Barry Ramsden and Linda Matthews who went beyond the call of duty to ensure that as many people as possible had the opportunity to compete in this year’s Closed Tournament for both the men and women; he was also full of praise for Craig Phillips who’s preparation for his 2 finals was preceded by almost 3 hours on court coaching juniors for the Club’s Open Day.

The next BW Controls Ltd Red Ball Tournament is on Sunday 17^th July from 11:00 with a Mini Orange Ball Tournament organised for Sunday afternoon from 1:00pm, Yellow is on 23^rd July and a Green ball on the 24^th July. The Avenue tennis Club will also be the venue for the Somerset Men’s Over 45s County match against Cornwall with a start time of 14:00 hrs.

Avenue Tennis Club Open Day 3 Jul 2011

Head Coach Vinny Duddy said that the Avenue Tennis Club’s annual Open Day on Sunday 3^rd July was a fantastic success with lots of new potential members, adults and juniors, coming to the club and having some coaching and fun with the Avenue’s coaching team with probably the best weather of the year so far. Starting at 10:30 Barry Ramsden and Sam Stead took over 35 youngsters on court with the mini red balls (Under 8’s) and went through a series of racket coordination skills, serving and finished off with some fun games. Craig Phillips and Heather Duddy took almost 30 Orange Ball kids (8 to 10 year olds) on 2 courts where they practiced some specific shots. Nick Arnold went on court with almost 15 teenagers of varying standards and took them through a series of drills. Head Coach Vinny Duddy took 10 adults onto a court and went through some steps to a good service action and finished off with a fun doubles game. Vinny wanted to thank the ladies from the club Poo Jenkins, Jayne Sanders, Elaine Amos and Lynn O Dell who worked extremely hard to provide all the attendees with hot food and drinks and some excellent strawberry cream teas. The hot meat was provided by Julie Cameron from Tickle Your Taste Buds our local carvery take away. Gordon and Pat Hunter took care of the Pimms and Lenny Cameron worked hard behind the bar keeping everyone refreshed.

At 12:30 all the coaching stopped so that the Somerset Closed Finalists could play their match to find out who would be Somerset’s Number 1. The final was an all Avenue affair with Martin Hoyland beating the Avenue’s Tennis Coach, Craig Phillips from Brean (6 v 4, 6 v 4) in a really tight, hard hitting fast match. Martin and Craig then took on Somerset Men’s Captain Matt Bernard and James Deem to find the Somerset Doubles Champions. Martin and Craig won this interesting doubles match (7 v 5, 6 v 3). Vinny passed on thanks to Tony Pryce Sports, Prince Rackets demonstrator Peter Clarke and Cosseys Produce for their attendance at the club’s Open day.
