The Avenue Tennis Club held the annual Ron Hines Tennis Tournament on Sunday 2nd November 08. The cup is played for in memory of Ron Hines who was a very active social playing member, an ex secretary and someone who always took part in the Sunday Social and other tournaments that are organised at the club.
The tournament was run as a mixed doubles competition with the points won during the matches being totalled at the end of the event. This year the trophy was won by Club Chairman, Gordon Hunter and Shelley Bamsey. However the ladies winner had to rely on the result between her and Jane Sanders who had won the same amount of points as Shelley but lost out on having her name on the cup as she had actually lost to Shelley during their actual match.
Head Coach, Vinny Duddy, was very pleased to see that one of the juniors from the Junior Academy (Georgina Cameron) was invited to make up the numbers and acquitted herself very well.
Vinny would also like to congratulate Avenue Trainee Coach, Craig Phillips who represented Somerset Men against Millfield School winning his singles match (6-3, 6-0) but losing out on his doubles. Craig has been chosen to represent Somerset Men again in the County Cup.
The next Avenue Tennis Club Sunday Mixed Doubles Social Tournament will be held on Sunday 7th December at 11:00, non members are welcome to come along and play although priority will be given to members.
The Avenue Tennis Club is a friendly, family oriented organisation whose members enjoy excellent facilities with 8 floodlit courts and a large clubhouse including bar facilities. Friday nights is family night where members and non members are encouraged to come down to either the adult coaching or club doubles match play. Junior members enjoy free organised fun tennis sessions for up to school year 3 from 6:30pm till 7:30pm, school year 4 and upwards from 7:30pm to 8:30pm. School year 7+ members have organised match-play from 8:00pm.
