FA Cup Final Social Tennis Tournament May 12

The Avenue Tennis Club’s monthly social tennis tournament coincided with the FA Cup Final and saw 28 players playing mixed doubles from 12 till 4:00 before retiring to the club house to watch the football on their large screen. Head coach Vinny Duddy who organized the event said it was a real success with a great range of players from Avenue Junior Academy players Joe & Daniel Rosser and Jess Griffiths to first team players Craig Phillips and Adam Teague. The event was jointly won, with 27 points each, by Lee Fowler/Jess Griffiths with teenagers Tom Holder/Rob Horler. Having both won their first 3 games achieving maximum game scores of 7 they both managed to lose their last games 7 v 6. Other notable results were Heinz Schroeder and Daniel Rosser and Colin Christison and Joe Rosser who both achieved 26 points.

The club will be running Mini Tennis Red and Orange Tournaments on Sunday 20^th from 11:00 and 1:00 respectively; contact club for details. The Road to Wimbledon events for under 14’s will also be held at the club on Saturday 26^th May; contact club for details.

The club run a variety of Adult social play sessions during the week on Wed and Fri evenings or Tue, Thur and Sund Morning. Coaching is available for juniors every night of the week and for adults on Thu, Fri and Saturday afternoons. Avenue Tennis Club Men’s League Begins Apr 12

The Avenue Tennis Club Men’s teams began their matches in the North Somerset Tennis League with a mix of results. The club runs 7 Men’s Team and 4 Ladies teams with Men’s matches played on Monday evenings and Ladies on a Tuesday; if you are interested in playing then please contact the club as they are always looking for new players or why not turn up and come along and watch some live tennis at the club.

The Men’s A Team playing at home and newly promoted to Division 1, of Craig Phillips, Rob Sweet, Adam Teague and teenager Corrie Nicholls welcomed Weston Super Mare A Team who included previous club coaches Jamie Allen and Greg Kyd. Phillips and Sweet managed to win both their rubbers with new partnership Teague and Nicholls losing both their rubbers in keenly fought matches meaning, that at 2 rubbers a piece, the match would be won or lost on the number of games won; Weston pipped it with 33 games to 32 thereby winning 6 v 4. The B Team of Glen Pigden, Nick Arnold, Colin Christison and Marcus Buncombe ran out winners against Cleeve A 9 v 3 at Cleeve. At home, Avenue’s C Team of Club Captain Richard Belfield, Tom Holder, Brian Phillips and Rich Meare lost 7 v 4 to an experienced Nailsea B Team. The D team travelled to local club Brent Knoll A with Club Coach Barry Ramsden, Ron Purcell and father and son Colin and Sam Stead. Like the first team, first pair Colin and Sam won both their rubbers with Ramsden and Purcell losing their rubbers; however when the games were counted back, both teams had 33 games each meaning they ended the night with a 5 v 5 draw. The Avenue E Team travelled to Winscombe B and was disappointed to lose 9 v 2 with youngster Harry Gough playing his first men’s league match with Lenny Cameron, Lee Fowler and Ian Parrish. The Avenue F team, playing at home against Cheddar D featured 2 teenagers Rob Horler and Josh Lutner playing their first ever Men’s League matches with Ian Phillips and Dave “Scooby” Vennall giving them some experienced match play support which saw them come out winners at 8 v 2. The new G Team of Simon Brafield, Kevin Burrow , Jason Channon and Darren Noades, all of whom joined the club recently, played their first ever league match against a strong Clevedon D team and came out winners at 9 v 2.

The club organises a monthly Adult social tennis tournaments and invites anyone who is interested in playing tennis to come along and join in. The next tournament is on Saturday 5^th May to coincide with the FA Cup Final with the tennis starting at 12:00 and finishing before kick off ; all are welcome to attend and play and to watch the football on the club’s large screen; some hot food will be available during half time along with other refreshments. The next social event, at the tennis club, is an Italian Night which will be held on Saturday 12^th May from 7:00 and will include some fine Italian style food for Adults from £10 and over 12’s from £5.

Avenue Tennis Club – LTA Grade 5 Tournament sponsored by The Royal Bank of Canada

Avenue Tennis Coach and LTA Referee Barry Ramsden and Linda Matthews ran a Grade 5 Tennis Tournament at the Avenue Tennis Club over the weekend of 21^st/22^nd Apr which was sponsored and supported by the Royal Bank of Canada, the LTA and the Avenue Tennis Club. The tournament is new to Somerset and is aimed at club and team players from around the surrounding area; other similar events have been planned at other Somerset clubs. The event was entered by 14 players (5 from the Avenue, 3 juniors (Rob Horler, Billy May, Josh Lutner) and 2 adults (Rob Sweet, Colin Christison) . Both Rob Horler and Rob Sweet did the Avenue proud by making it to the Semi Finals, however both lost to very experienced opposition. Neil Driver from Millfield School played Colin Selby and came out as the eventual winner with 6-0, 6-3 win.

Megan Tops County Leaderboard

Avenue Tennis Club Junior Megan has had a busy winter series since moving up an age group to 9 and under, even though she is still only 8. Having achieved Red 1 status nearly a year earlier than LTA guidelines she is now playing Orange ball on a bigger court. She has been travelling around the West Country with mum and dad, Clare and Scott, picking up wins which has helped her achieve orange 1 status leading to her topping the county leader board for this age group. She is now working hard on achieving orange1* rating which will require her to play regional grade 3 and above competitions around the country. Megan also attended a county talent i.d day in January which achieved extremely positive feedback about her future tennis career. Megan’s coach Vinny Duddy said she has worked really hard to get where she is and seems really determined to continue her progress and with the excellent support of her parents will continue to improve. Megan’s confidence, personality, and determination to improve herself continues to impress Duddy who said she has changed a lot from the timid little girl who came along to the after school club at Mark School.

The club run a variety of coaching sessions including Pay and Play on a Saturday, Squad Sessions that run in line with school term times and have Academy style squads for those youngsters who would like to focus a little more on tennis. Duddy said that in the Academy Squads the players come along to at least 3 hours of tennis a week (2 squads and 1 individual) and are encouraged to play in tournaments, which are organized at the club or around the county and further, providing the parents have the time. Duddy also said that several of the current youngsters at the club are also doing really well and should be pushing Megan and other County Standard players in the near future. He said that if there are any other budding sports stars in Burnham that their parents would like to get involved in tennis to contact him at the club (01278 782758).

Avenue Tennis Club – Vinnys Minis – coming up to the 10th Anniversary

Vinny’s Minis is a fun tennis session on Friday nights from 6:30 till 7:30 for those children up to year group 3 and for those from year group 4 till 6 from 7:30 till 8:30. The session is run by Vinny Duddy and Nick Arnold although in Aug 2004 (at the first anniversary) pictured above were trainee coaches Mark Flash Gordon, Emily Rossitter and club coach Barry Ramsden. Duddy said I can’t believe it’s nearly 10 years since we started up the sessions which was aimed at giving the kids something to do whilst their parents were doing the adult coaching session at 6:30 till 8:00. The adult coaching is still available but we have lots of parents who come along and leave the kids with us whilst they go off and have a set or two before retiring to the bar for a chat and a drink. We also have the three hard courts allocated to juniors from year group 7+ and they play, singles or doubles, dependant upon numbers. Duddy said it’s really great down the club on Friday evenings when all eight courts are being used and the place is buzzing, the bar is open and there’s a good crowd of families and friends enjoying the fantastic facilities at the Tennis Club.

Easter Holiday Tennis Club 2012

The Avenue Tennis Club Easter Junior Tennis Camp started the week off with quite a few new faces and a couple of players from the club’s BW Controls Ltd Mini Orange Academy Squad. Head Coach Vinny Duddy and Club Coach Barry Ramsden took the players through their paces and spent some time teaching serve, forehand and backhand technique before finishing off with some fun games that incorporated the serve and backhand shots. Duddy said that there were still places available the 2^nd week of the Club’s Easter School Holiday Junior Tennis Camp which runs from 9:00 am till 4:00 pm daily from 10^th – 13^th Apr. with Duddy and other club coach Craig Phillips taking the sessions; forms can be downloaded via the website or from the club house. The club are running a day of coaching, at the club. during the Burnham Infants and St Andrews Junior Schools Inset Day on 16^th April from 9:00 till 4:00pm.

June 12 – School Holiday Tennis Club

The coaches will take the youngsters through a variety of tennis shots and racket skills using a combination of drills and fun games to teach. Avenue Head Coach continues with his Spanish Training

Avenue Tennis Club, Head Coach, Vinny Duddy attended two Registro Profesional De Tenis (RPT) Spanish training courses at Teddington Tennis Club in London thereby ensuring he met the British LTA’s Continual Professional Development requirements for this year. Duddy said, in order for the Avenue Tennis Club to retain and continue with it’s prestigious Clubmark Award the LTA require that their coaches obtain 18 license points a year to maintain their LTA Licence which means at least 3 professional development day long tennis courses. He said both the courses were very good, court based sessions that gave him some more new ideas for including on the club’s tennis programmes and his own personal coaching sessions.

Duddy said that there were still places available the Club’s Easter School Holiday Junior Tennis Camp which runs from 9:00 am till 4:00 pm daily from 2^nd – 5^th Apr (week 1) and 10^th – 13^th Apr (week 2); forms can be downloaded via the website or from the club house.

Coming up at the Club on 1 Apr is a red ball tournament (under 8s) and an orange ball tournament (8 to 9 year olds), a new weekend long Grade 5 yellow ball tournament for all players (21^st – 22^nd Apr) and an Adult social tournament on 5^th May to coincide with the FA Cup Final. Adult social play on Wed and Fri evenings or Tue, Thur and Sund Morning. Coaching is available for juniors every night of the week and for adults on Thu,Fri and Saturday afternoons or if you would like to private 1 to 1 coaching this can be organised throught the clubs coaches.

As well as coaching, social play and tournaments at the club there is a very vibrant social section who organise fun social evenings with food and entertainment at exceptional value for money; the next one is an Italian themed night on 12^th May; please sign up at the club if you wish to attend. The club also has a Wednesday Supper evening, twice a month, which is generally a 3 course meal for the cost of £7.50; again please sign up at the club.

Avenue Tennis Club – School Visits Burnham Infants Mar 12

Avenue Tennis coaches Vinny Duddy and Craig Phillips continued their free school visits with 2 days at Burnham Infants where they took the teachers through some fun indoor tennis games that they can set up and run during their PE periods. The school games included Hand Tennis Exterminator, Snappa Tennis, Ice Cream Tennis, Balloon Tennis and 3-2-1 Fire. Duddy said it is really great to go to the schools and see the enthusiasm with which tennis and coaches are received but said they needed to find ways to encourage the parents to bring the kids along to the tennis club where they have coaching for all abilities (children and adults) throughout the weekdays and Saturdays. He pointed out that at this age development of coordination, ball sending and receiving skills were essential and that the tennis oriented exercises were easily transferable into other sports, not to mention the fact that they were outside, in a safe environment, where they could also improve their fitness levels.

During the visits to Burnham Infants, St Andrews and Churchfields the coaches promoted the Open Day which was held on Mothers Day from 11:00 till 1:00pm. Duddy and Phillips, along with club coach Barry Ramsden and Academy player Billy May ran the Open Day for the children and parents. Duddy said it was great to see the parents getting involved in the games and coordination exercise and hoped that he would see some of them back at the club doing the coaching squads.

The club also had a St Patrick’s Night celebration which went extremely well with some excellent food and live accoustic entertainment from Mike Wooley. Duddy praised the efforts of the social committee (Julie Cameron, Poo Jenkins, Lynn O’Dell, Jane Sanders, Rosie Neville and Mel Belfield) who organised and produced the food for the event which had over 80 members and non members attending. The next social evening is on Saturday 12th May when there will be an Italian Night; if you would like to attend please come down and put your name on the list in the club’s foyer.
