FA Cup Final Social Tennis Tournament 2013

The Avenue Tennis Club ran a fun FA Cup Final Mixed Doubles Social Tennis Tournament on Saturday 11^th May which was won by Colin Christison and resulted in a tie of 2 ladies Dawn Redwood and Ladies Captain Carrie Vohra. Each lady played the first to 6 games against each other with a different male partner which saw Colin winning all 4 of his matches with 24 points and Dawn and Carrie tying with 19 points. Head Coach Vinny Duddy said he was really pleased to see how well Avenue Juniors Ben Ayers and Dan Young competed in their first adult tournament.

The club will also be running the BW Controls Ltd Red (Under 8’s) and Orange (9 – 9 year olds) Tournaments on Sunday 26^th May from 11:00 and 1:00pm respectively.

A Whitsun School Holiday Tennis Club will be held from 28^th till 31^st May with qualified LTA coaches Vinny Duddy and Craig Phillips taking youngsters on court from 9:00 till 4:00 and teaching them to play tennis through some fun games, skills and drills; you can book from 1 to 4 days – application forms available from the website www.avenuetennis.com .

The club coaches provide group and individual coaching every night of the week after school and on Saturday’s for all ages and abilities with adult classes on Friday evening or Saturday afternoons – details can be found on their website- www.avenuetennis.com

RBC Capital Markets Grade 5 Open Tournament

The Avenue Tennis Club ran a LTA Grade 5 Open Tennis Tournament supported by RBC Capital Markets on Sunday 28^th April with 8 players (4 from the Avenue and others from Devon, Clevedon and Weston). All the players played 3 matches, making it a very long day with Carlos Ledesma(Clevedon) beating Rob Sweet (Avenue) 6 – 3, 6 – 0 in the final. The event was run by Coach and LTA Referee Barry Ramsden who said that he was very pleased with the event and in particular with Josh Lutner, Josh Baldwin and Rob Horler, all of whom are still at school who competed well with the other more experienced adult players. He also wanted to thank Pooh Jenkins, Rosie Neville and Lynn O’Dell for coming down to do some food and ensure the bar was open for the competitors and visitors who came down to watch or support.

The next tournament at the Avenue Tennis Club is on Saturday 11^th May when there will be a Fun FA Cup Final Day Doubles Event from 12:00 and all are welcome to attend and play or come along to watch the tennis. The football will be shown on the large screen with both food and bar available during the match. The club will also be holding it’s Wimbledon Ticket Ballot on the 11^th May when members attending the event will have the opportunity of choosing a pair of Wimbledon Tickets of their choice should their names be drawn during the draw; winning draw members not attending will have their draw tickets allocated on the evening.

The club also have the Road to Wimbledon Junior event on Sunday 12^th May where local juniors get the opportunity to play in an event that ends up with juniors from around the country competing at Wimbledon later in the year. The club will also be running the BW Controls Ltd Red (Under 8’s) and Orange (9 – 9 year olds) Tournaments on Sunday 26^th May from 11:00 and 1:00pm respectively.

Avenue Tennis Club Coaches vist St Andrews

The Avenue Tennis Club coaches, Vinny Duddy and Craig Phillips, visited St Andrews Junior School with a view to teaching the teachers some fun tennis games that can be played indoors. Duddy said the teachers were fantastic and showed some real interest in the games that were played saying that they would try and incorporate them into their PE Lessons in the future. Duddy said the games were played over 3 days with 9 classes, of over 280 children, all playing for their indiviudal houses leading to White House winning and he was amazed at how close the overall scores were in the end. Duddy said the 1 hour sessions were geared at giving the teachers some serving games (teaching the throwing action – Chinamen, Serving Skittles) and Boundary Games (teaching ball skills, movement and tactics – Snappa tennis, Hand tennis, Ice Cream Tennis, Sandwich and Tap Tennis).

WINNING DRAW MEMBERS ATTENDING THE DRAW WILL BE ABLE TO CHOOSE A TICKET OF THEIR CHOICE – WINNING DRAW MEMBERS NOT ATTENDING WILL BE ALLOCATED A TICKET DRAWN AT RANDOM

BW Controls Ltd Red and Orange Tournaments 2013

The Avenue Tennis Club was the venue for 3 tournaments on Sunday 24^th Mar for both Juniors and Adults. The Junior BW Controls Ltd Red and Orange Tournaments were for those chidren under 8 and from 8 to 9 year olds respectively. Running in conjuction with the Red Tournament was a club Adult Social Doubles Competition.

Head Coach, Vinny Duddy said that it was great to see so many parents turn out to support their children in such cold and difficult weather conditions. The Red Tournament saw 4 players 1 from Weston TC, 1 Bridgwater TC and 2 from the Avnue compete against each other twice with Rubens Hathaway, from Weston TC winning all 6 of his matches with the players playing each other twice. The Orange Tournament saw 8 players, from All Hallows TC, Wedmore TC and 6 from the Avenue, compete for the BW Controls Ltd Trophy. Playing against each other, best of 3 sets of seven points, Duddy said the standards of tennis was awesome and that he was really pleased with the good sportsmanship shown by all the players. Once again he thanked the parents for bringing the players and then staying around to support them. The BW Controls Ltd trophy was won by Matthias Benischke who trains with Avenue’s Academy Squad winning all 7 of his matches, with second place going to Thomas Spinks (Avenue Academy Squad) who narrowly lost 7 v 5, 7 v 5 to Matthias.

The Adult Social Tournament saw 7 ladies and 1 man play in a round robin tournament, best of 9 games, which saw Dawn Redwood and Jenny Fitzpatrick win. Duddy said he was very disppointed with the turn out from the male players and hoped that at the next tournament on 14^th April more men players would make the effort to turn out.

The club has an Open Day on Easter Sunday 31^st Mar and would like to invite you to come along and have some tennis fun whilst learning with their coaches from 11:00 till 1:00pm; no equipment needed as it will be available on the day. Refreshments will be available on the day and if you bring your “Passports” along they will be stamped!!!!

Avenue 2013 Schools Tennis Blitz serves off at Berrow

Avenue Tennis Club coaches Vinny Duddy and Barry Ramsden took the first of the Avenue’s 2013 Tennis Blitz to Berrow Infants School. Head coach, Vinny Duddy said, we go into the schools each year to try and raise some interest in our Sport. The visit to Berrow was actually aimed at teaching the teachers/assistants of year 1 and year 5 some indoor tennis games that they could do with large groups indoors. Duddy said the games are fun groups games, with a tennis theme, that should allow the teachers to teach some of the fundamentals of most any sports from throwing, athletic foundation, sending or receiving balls together with other individual and team skills. Duddy said we had a great time with the kids as usual and invited them all along to the Avenue’s Open Day on Easter Sunday, 31^st Mar from 11:00 till 1:00pm

Lympsham Children’s University Passports are stamped at the Avenue

Avenue Tennis Club and Lympsham School have signed up to the Children’s Univerity Programme which is a national project aimed at recognizing the achievements of young people aged 5 – 14 who take part in exciting, innovative quality activities outside of normal school hours. The main aim of the Children’s University is to raise the aspirations of our young people by introducing them to a wide range of learning opportunities and a love of lifetime learning. Children are all give their own “Passport to Learning” in which they are encouraged to collect hours of learning towards nationally recognised certificates for completing 30 (Bronze), 65 (Silver) and 100 (Gold) hours of learning; for more information see website – www.childrensuniversity.co.uk. Head Coach Vinny Duddy said that he was very pleased to register the Avenue Tennis Club as one of the Childrens University Learning Destinations and would be stamping and signing passports for the kids attending the after schools clubs or any of the many coaching sessions at the tennis club.

Craig tops the Avenue Ladder at end of Feb 13

Craig Phillips left it to the last day of February to ensure that he took his rightful place at the top of the Avenue Tennis Club Ladder at the end of the month. Kevin Burrow was top up to the last day of February and was scheduled to play Craig but the top position was taken by Toby Earthy just before their match which meant that Craig then challenged Toby who played a strong match only to be beaten by the much more consistent and powerful hitting of Avenue Club Coach, Phillips. Head Coach, Vinny Duddy said, the singles ladder has taken off with several players all playing singles when they would normally have played doubles; the handicap system ensures that all players have a chance of beating higher rated and more experienced players. Some results during February included Rob Sweet overcoming an 11 point handicap to beat coach Barry Ramsden, Kevin Burrow just holding onto his 4 point advantage beating up and coming youngster Josh Lutner 32 to 30 and Simon Brafield overcoming a 2 point handicap to beat Jason Channon.

BW Controls Ltd Red and Orange Tournament – 24th Feb 13

The first BW Controls Ltd Junior Tennis Tournaments of 2013 took place on Sunday 24^th Feb with 4 players competing for the Red Trophy (Under 8’s) and 7 competiting in the Orange Trophy (under 10’s) at the Avenue Tennis Club.

Despite the freezing cold weather the 4 red players played 2 games of 10 points against each other which saw Ben Jones from the Bristol Lawn Tennis Club winning the event with 5 out 6 wins. Head Coach Vinny Duddy said it was really nice to see 3 players from the Avenue providing some stiff competition with Adam Webb competing in his first ever tournament ending up 2^nd, Lydia Menear taking a match of the eventual winner in only her 2^nd tournament along with Samuel Lodge who played extremely well despite feeling unwell with a cold and bad cough.

The afternoon event saw 7 players (5 from the Avenue, 1 from Weston and 1 from Wedmore Tennis Clubs) playing out some fantastic matches despite some small snow flurries and a cold wind. Pictured above are the 7 players with Dylan Webb, from St Josephs Infants, winning all 6 of his matches against some really tough opposition. Head Coach, Vinny Duddy said afterward the standard of the tennis was good but it was even better to see the commitment from the players to turn up and play in these weather conditions; he particularly praised all the parents who brought and watched their children play. He also thanked his daughter Heather who refereed and kept all the play going throughout the day together with Mr Lee Fowler for his support of the Junior Tennis Competitions at the Avenue. The next BW Controls Ltd Junior competitions are scheduled for the 24^th Mar and anyone wishing to play should contact the Vinny at the Avenue tennis Club.

Avenue Tennis Club Singles Ladder With New Scoring Format

The first ever Avenue Tennis Club Singles Ladder games were played on Valentines Night, with Kevin Burrow overcoming a two shot handicap to beat Jason Channon 31 points to 20 and Lenny Cameron beating Vinny Duddy 31 to 29 after starting with just a 4 shot lead. Head Coach Vinny Duddy said we have had the singles ladder up for some time now but the players did not seem to want to play a full singles match so the Avenue’s other coach and LTA referee Barry Ramsden suggested a different scoring format which although not to everyones liking does gives players the opportunity to play a competitive match on the ladder without requiring too much time – if you would like to get involved in the ladder then please contact Vinny at the club (01278 782758).

As well as singles competition the club has a number of Mens and Ladies Doubles teams which compete in the North Somerset League; again if you are interested in getting involved in some competitive tennis please contact vinny at the club. If competitve tennis is not for you then why not try out some organised social tennis either during the day (mornings – Tue/Thu/Sun) or nights (from 6:30 – Wed/Fri). The next adult social competition is on Sunday 24^th Feb from 10:30, non members are welcome to attend and play.
