Ladies tennis at the Avenue Tennis Club – May 21

Friday 7th May saw mums and aunties of the Avenue Tennis Club junior players having a tennis lesson with Vinny Duddy on the Avenue tarmacadam tennis courts under the lights.  Duddy said he had mentioned to mum Holly Piper that he was willing some free tennis sessions with the mums, aunties and friends in an effort to encourage them to get involved with their kids on court and encourage some more ladies down to the tennis club.  Holly and some of the other mums came back very quickly with family and friends who would be interested, so they organised to do three free 2 hours courses, during May.  Duddy said the first session was brilliant and went much better than he had hoped with all the ladies getting involved and having a laugh whilst learning to hit some forehands and backhands with a little serving thrown in and some matches at the end.

Tennis manager, Barry Ramsden said it was great to see all 8 courts being used.  As well as the ladies’ course there was Friday night social tennis on all 4 Astra courts and another all-adult course going on, on the final court.  Barry is keen to remind everyone that the tennis club has a month’s free membership offer available for anyone who wants to give tennis a go and wants to get an insight into the club before joining – please contact Barry at the club 01278 782758 or 07749 878581 for details.  The club are also participating in the LTA initiative to get more people back into or just get them onto a tennis court and have allocated some court times for non- members to come and have a go – more details can be obtained from the LTA website – https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/rally or contact the Barry at the club.

Barry said that the new course for Adult beginners and “rusty” rackets wanting to get back into tennis or to take up tennis for the first time, was also going really well and that he had further spaces available for anyone who wanted to come along and have some fun and exercise, whilst meeting some new people from the town and surrounding area.

The club run a variety of coaching courses throughout the weekdays with coaches Wendy Prior, Vinny and Barry which can be booked through the club or you can message on the club’s facebook page.  There is also junior coaching on Saturday mornings for all age groups; details can be found on their website or facebook page and all the coaches are available for individual lessons.

The club has several social morning tennis sessions as well as Friday night with Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday being the main ones.  The club are also opening their bar from 12 on Sundays and are following the outdoor Covid restrictions under the fantastic management of Lynn O’Dell.
