The Saints (St Joseph’s, St John’s and St Andrew’s) visited the Avenue Tennis Club on Thursday 16th October 08 to participate in a Tennis Festival, organised by Sarah Musset of Kings Alfreds, for the Burnham on Sea Junior Schools.
Avenue Head Coach, Vinny Duddy along with Barry Ramsden and Craig Phillips provided a day of tennis coaching and organised match-play for the schools that managed to attend.
The children arrived early morning and were put through their paces with some footwork drills for warm up routines. Each of the coaches then took a school each through serving, forehand and backhand together with practice on match-play and how to score.
The afternoon saw a competition between the schools with the 8 children per school competing in a tie break doubles competition, girls v girls and boys v boys. Each pair played a tie break set to 7 with the total number of points added up at the end of the play to ascertain a winner. St Andrews came 3rd with 36 points, St John’s 2nd with 42 points and winners were St Josephs with 50 points.

Head Coach, Vinny Duddy thanked the children for attending and welcomed them back for some more free coaching provided they brought a friend with them on Saturday. He was most impressed with how they picked up the scoring and match-play in such a short time and was very pleased with the way they played in a competitive yet very sporting and friendly manner.
An October School Holiday Junior Tennis Camp will be held at the Avenue Club from the 27th October to 31st October 08 which will be more focused on tennis coaching and play than previous Junior Holiday Camps. The Ron Hines Mixed Doubles Trophy will be played on Sunday 2nd November from 10:30 am, when the draw for partners will be made, all are welcome to attend and play.
