Winners, after a hard-fought final at Winscombe tennis club, were  The Avenue’s own Craig Phillips and Jamie Allan, from Woodlands (Weston). They beat Charlie Hart and Dave Austin, from Lympsham.

Losing semi-finalists were Chris Wheeler and Jon Treen, from Woodlands, and Alastair Gregory, of Wedmore, and Greg Spink, tennis coach at Clifton College, Bristol.

A total of 12 pairs entered from seven clubs, with the youngest players aged just 12. The tournament organiser was Peter Hucker, chairman of Winscombe.

The Club ENCOURAGES the opportunity to play and ENJOY TENNIS at whatever age or ability.  ‘ORGANISED’ SOCIAL TENNIS sessions take place on Tuesday; Thursday & Sunday mornings and Wednesday & Friday evenings guaranteeing everyone turning up a game.  Otherwise members are free to organise their own games.

PROFESSIONAL COACHES are resident at the Club and organise COACHING COURSES (Group or Individual) at most time to suit.  From JUNIOR BEGINNERS (MINI-TENNIS), through to ADULT BEGINNERS; IMPROVERS or ADVANCED.

JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT SQUADS and ADULT COACHING & MATCHPLAY sessions are geared to those players wishing to further improve their game. 

Our facilities cater for disabled players, carers and their families, although at present we do not have anyone qualified to take training courses.

HOLIDAY TENNIS CAMPS are organised during most every school holidays and are very competitively priced and focus on tennis training.

COMPETITIVE TENNIS is available at all levels for those who seek it.  We have MENS; LADIES; MIXED and JUNIOR teams in the North Somerset and other Tennis Leagues.

A SOCIAL ATMOSPHERE for JUNIORS and ADULTS is encouraged.  A Pool Table; Large screen projector system, Television, Wi-Fi and other facilities are available, and a VARIETY of JUNIOR and ADULT SOCIALS regularly take place.  From MAY to SEPTEMBER Club Suppers are available on Wednesday Evenings (from 8:00pm) at a very modest cost for members and friends.

A LARGE NEW CLUBHOUSE which has a well stocked Bar; Social Area and excellent changing facilities with SHOWERS and for summer outdoor social events there is also a PATIO & BBQ AREA.

OUR CLUBHOUSE & Patio & BAR can be HIRED for your private party or function.  There is room for up to 75 seated people (100+ standing buffet style) and we allow hirers to do their own catering, which keeps the costs down although we can recommend excellent local caterers as well.

As well as an excellent state of the art clubhouse and changing facilities we have a large patio area surrounded by a large grassed area with a boules pit.  As you can see from the photographs below we can provide an excellent venue for all occassions.

New members find us to be a friendly crowd and soon make new friends. Friday tends to be the busiest night of the week as many spouses are social members and they and their children come along even if they don’t play tennis

The bar itself is stocked with a full range of wines, spirits and soft drinks as well as lager and beer from the barrel.

The main social gatherings at the club are :

Wednesday night (8-11) Friday night (8pm till late) Sunday lunch time (12-2.30)

Competitive tennis nights are on Mondays for men and Tuesdays for the ladies; these are the nights that the Somerset Tennis League Matches are normally played. Once the league is over both the men and women continue throughout the year.

Juniors – between 6.30 and 8:30 on Friday nights Vinny Duddy, runs fun and games activities – up to school year 3 from 6:30 – 7:30 and year 4+ from 7:30 to 8:30.

Adults – why not bring your kids along to join in the fun and get some healthy exercise at the same time, whilst you take part in the Adult coaching from 6:30 – 8:00pm or join in the social play.

Juniors – School year 7 + have their own Junior Matchplay Night on a Friday evening from 8:00 – 9:45 pm on courts 2, 3 and 4 which are exclusively set aside for the juniors.

Wednesday Night Dinners

For a special treat, why not come along and enjoy a fantastic 3 course meal at exceptional value. Liz Bailey has many years of catering experience and provides us with excellent meals on alternate Wednesdays through most of the year – see the notice board to find out what exciting dish she will be preparing and put your name on the listing.

Captain’s Dinner

Each Autumn the club Captain hosts a formal evening of food and drink with a resident disco until the small hours.

Xmas Lunch

A formal Sunday lunch is organised in December to celebrate Xmas. Dates for this and other events will be posted under the News and Events section.

Junior Xmas Party

A Junior Xmas Party is normally organised and run instead of Vinny’s Minis on the Friday night nearest to Christmas Day.

Chairman’s Xmas Mince Pies

Each year, on a Sunday close to Xmas, the Chairman extends a warm xmas welcome to all members and non members who want to come to the tennis club and enjoy a mince pie and a festive drink.

New Year’s Eve Party

Details of the New Year’s Eve Parties can be obtained from the office or the notice boards – this is a family orientated evening.

The Avenue had
mixed results in the Men’s and Ladies Somerset League this year.  The Men’s
Avenue B & C team and the ladies A team were promoted but the Men’s A and D
team were demoted together along with the Ladies B, C and D teams.

The men’s first team were badly depleted this year with lots of players coming to fill in for injuries and holidays.  Craig Phillips and Rob Sweet battled well in a very strong league with Glen Pigden having almost a different partner for most game he played in.

Avenue Mens' C team won Division 6 of the North Somerset Tennis League in style by beating their closest rivals, Brent Knoll A team, 8-2 in the final game of the season.  Both teams gained promotion with Avenue winning the league by a 22 point margin after maintaining an unbeaten record both home and away.  Pictured after their final win are (l-r) Darren Lloyd, James Goodall, Jacques Macinnes and Neil Darby.

The D Team came up against some experienced A teams in this division and struggled.  However the team fielded several new club players Julie Cameron (Club Membership Secretary), Jackie Whelaghan, Angela Marshfield along with experienced players Kay Rossiter and Shelley Bamsey

Mens and Ladies practice nights have recommenced at 6:30 on Mondays and Tuesdays  espectively; all are welcome to attend.

The Ladies A team returned to the first division led by Captain Emily Rossiter who partnered  young county player Nicole Priestman losing only 2 of 20 matches. Linda Matthews and Debbie Smith were the other successful pair, with Kelly Anne Vennell  playing on occasion.

We try to cater for everyones needs and each of the various tournaments are detailed above.  Details for entry can be found in following tabs.

League Tennis

Each year Avenue LTC takes part in the North Somerset League, playing fixtures home and away across this section of the county (this area stretches to Minehead, Glastonbury/Wells, Nailsea and Backwell). If you wish to play, sign up on the club noticeboard now or see Vinny or Craig in the office and they will let the Captains know of your interest.

We run 5 men’s and 4 ladies’ Summer League teams to cater to encourage wide club participation.  If you would like to play for a team, please contact either the Men’s or Ladies’ Captain (see Committee link) .We also take part in Winter League in which teams play a ladies’ doubles, a men’s doubles and a mixed doubles to complete the fixture.

Match fees are £2 adults and free for participating juniors.  This is payable for all matches home and away and helps us cover the season’s costs for balls and lights (where needed).

Club subscriptions must be paid before you take part in League – this is a North Somerset League rule.

We are a friendly family-oriented tennis club located on the Somerset coast in Burnham-on-Sea. New members are always welcome and, being the largest club in the county with around 300 members, we have lots to offer everyone from beginners through to county players.

Friday nights is family night where members and non members are encouraged to come down to either the adult coaching or club doubles match play. Junior members enjoy free organised fun tennis sessions for up to school year 3 from 6:30pm till 7:30pm, school year 4 and upwards from 7:30pm to 8:30pm. School year 7+ members have organised match-play from 8:00pm. Tennis is played all year round at The Avenue thanks to our having 8 floodlit courts. We invested over £40,000 in 2006 replacing 3 of the Astroturf court surfaces, refreshing the hard court surfaces and upgrading the floodlights.

If you wish to play league doubles, we enter 5 men’s and 4 ladies’ summer league teams and 2 mixed winter league teams. Floodlights are free for all members on social club play nights (Wednesday and Friday). The social side of the club is thriving and we have a fantastic modern clubhouse with disabled facilities and a large patio area for summer use.  At the heart of the clubhouse is a well managed bar selling draught lager, beer and cider as well as wine, spirits, soft drinks and snacks.  The bar, function hall and kitchen are available for hire to parties of up to 100 guests.

Avenue Tennis Club Men’s Captain (Simon Prior) and Ladies Captain (Lynn O’Dell) hosted the Annual Captains Dinner at the Avenue Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday 4^th October 08.  The Men’s Captain, Simon donated and introduced the Most Improved Player Cup which was won by youngster Jack Tonkin. 

Simon praised the men’s B and C teams who both obtained promotion from their respective leagues. Colin Christison picked up the league cup for the B team and Darren Lloyd, captain of the C team collected their trophy on the evening.

Lynn praised the ladies B and C teams who also obtained promotion from their respective leagues.

The presentation side of the evening was kept short and sweet by Club Captain Simon, who went on to show his dance moves on the floor only to be outshone by Club Chairman, Gordon Hunter, who danced the night away putting to shame some of the other younger club members.  Other club members, Lyn O’Dell made an outstanding contribution assisting with not only the décor but also with some food preparation.  Sally Christison, Julie and Lenny Cameron, Pat and Gordon Hunter also assisted with the preparations for the evening function.

Head Coach Vinny Duddy attended the evening and commented that this was the best Captains Dinner that he had been to in his long time at the club, with Liz Bailey putting on some excellent food and her son, doing a super job with the music, keeping most of the party goers up on the dance floor all evening.

There will be an October School Holiday Junior Tennis Camp held at the Avenue Club from the 27^th October to 31^st October 08 which will be more focused on tennis coaching and play than previous Junior Holiday Camps.  Places are limited, so please contact the office (01278 782758) to ensure your place is booked.

The Ron Hines Mixed Doubles Trophy will be played on Sunday 2^nd November from 10:30 am, when the draw for partners will be made, all are welcome to attend and play.
